A broom corn wreath is a beautiful, natural decor piece that will be perfect all the way though fall. See how to make one below!
A few years ago, I used broom corn on our fall front porch in our decor. I loved it’s color, it’s whispy personality and the texture it added to my fall front porch that year. This year I was able to get some again and decided that I really wanted to show it off by making a broom corn wreath (two, actually) for our front doors.
What is Broom Corn?
First, let’s answer a simple question. What is broom corn? I saw this “corn” a few years ago at a plant nursery near us and I fell in love with it’s seedy, kind-of-frilly top stalks. However, it’s not actually corn. It’s related to sorghums and is also called Great Millet and Indian Millet, among other names. The seed heads were once used to make brooms and brushes. Nowadays, it’s mostly decorative. It comes in a variety of colors, which I personally love. The broom corn I’m able to find is more of a fall color mix.
Where can I find Broom Corn?
In order to make this Broom Corn wreath, you will need to find Broom Corn. I find mine at a local garden nursery center. Check those locations around you before venturing onto the internet to shop. Call before you go to make sure they have it, unless there’s somewhere you really want to go anyways.
If you can’t find any in your general area, you can order it. I found some on Etsy {HERE} (as well as brooms). I found some on Amazon {HERE}, but I honestly can’t tell is this is the seed or the dried corn.
How to make a Broom Corn Wreath
To make a Broom Corn Wreath you will need a wreath form – either grapevine or wire, broom corn and some floral wire or floral tape.
I like to start by creating a base for my broom corn wreath our of the regular corn stalks. These are generally found on the bottom of broom corn. However, if you’re using broom corn from Etsy or Amazon or something dried, you can buy a regular corn stalk and use those to create the base.
I weave the corn stalks through the grapevine wreath and use the branches or the wreath itself to hold it in place. If you’re using a a metal wreath form you can use floral wire or floral tape. Or, you can tie the stalks onto the form.
Once I have kind of a background, I start weaving in the broom corn itself. I found that it is easier to work with shorter pieces of broom corn here. It gives you more control. I just kind of shove the end of the corn into the grapevine wreath and then work my way around the wreath. Make sure the broom corn is all going in the same direction and fill as you need to.
If you find some pieces are a little too all over the place, you can secure them with floral wire. I didn’t use any floral wire at first, but once the wreath was hanging, I decided to secure some pieces.
You can find print able instructions below.

Broom Corn Wreath
Ingredients
- Wreath form - grapevine prefered
- Two bunches of broom corn
- Floral wire
- Wire cutters or branch cutters
Instructions
- First remove lower stalks from the broom corn and use the plain pieces to build a background. Weave the corn fronds through the grapevine wreath all around the wreath.
- Once you have a good base, cut pieces of broom corn a few inches below the seeded "broom" part of the corn.
- Push the cut bottoms through the grapevine wreath to secure it. You can use floral wire if you need to also.
- Continue to weave corn through the grapevine going in the same direction until you get all the way around.
- Lift the wreath to see how things are falling once it is vertical. Use floral wire to secure any pieces that stray too far from where you want them. Then hang and enjoy!
