Fall has officially arrived and with it comes bushels of cozy inspiration for autumn décor. One of my favorite things to create to usher in the season is a beautiful, cozy harvest tablescape with natural elements.
With the last of the harvest coming in from farm fields before life quiets down for the winter, autumn feels like a true celebration of the seasons’ of the past year and all the work we’ve put into making our farm come to life. And to me there is no better place to start that celebration than around a beautiful harvest table with loved ones.
Using natural and found items
To start, I wanted my harvest table to be full of natural and/or found elements from vintage stores. Natural plants are more sustainable and I don’t have to have a room dedicated to seasonal décor. Ideally, I wanted to decorate for autumn this year with branches, pumpkins and dried flowers I’ve found around the farm. However, we just don’t grow enough yet to have those things in prolific quantities.
Instead, I’ve been able to work with Thelma’s Flowers, a local florist, and get the extra pieces I’ve been looking for and help support one of my favorite Grand Rapids small businesses during this less than ideal year. The shop is named after the owner’s grandma. Isn’t that sweet?!
Additionally, I decided to use a table I just purchased from a local vintage store here in Grand Rapids. I had bought it to be my desk but since I have yet to begin rearranging things in my office, I decided to use it for the table first. It’s a gorgeous piece of reclaimed wood with tons of character from decades of use. If it doesn’t work out as my desk I may actually move it into the barn to be used there as a table.
Once I had the table and the idea, it was time to decode on the colors for the harvest tablescape.
Harvest tablescape cozy reds
I’m a fall girl through and through. It is my favorite season and the colors during this time of year speak to my soul and the warmth it always needs after a busy summer. This season, I’m really finding myself pulled towards burgundy. I’ve always loved the color and think it works well for not only fall but all the way up through Thanksgiving and the Christmas season too.
When I found the Strawberry Blonde tinted sunflowers with burgundy coloring towards the center, I used them as an inspiration for the table itself.
The layering effect
I began with a base of curly willow branches. I liked their somewhat wild nature and that they were tough enough to have a few pumpkins sitting on them. The color was also a nice neutral with a just a touch of golden tones.
Then I layered in some German Statice and some burgundy tinted Solidago. I like how the white of the German Statice helps to set the centerpiece for the fall harvest tablescape apart from the table itself. And the Solidago pulled in that deep, lovely red with a few bits of gold on the tips.
TIP: Solidago and German Statice dry really well! They’re great to use, dry and then save season after season. Just be gentle with them.
Once that was done I began layering in the sunflowers – both tinted Strawberry Blonde’s and creamy white ones.
Then I added on burgundy Kangaroo Paw, which I love due to all the texture it adds. Additionally, I slipped in some burgundy Leucadendron to add some stronger touches of the burgundy color throughout.
Lastly, I toped it all with creamy, white pumpkins. White pumpkins are nothing new to the farmhouse world, but I really love them here because they lighten up the whole arrangement.
If I had used another color like traditional orange, I think it would have been too overpowering, And if I had used something more updated like the lighter orange pumpkins you may see now or even the pink pumpkins, I believe they would have blended in too much.
Previously used
To set the table, I used the plates we have in the barn. They match the creamy pumpkin color and give the table a bit more brightness. I love the way they standout against the wood. I actually used it as part of last year’s Thanksgiving Table. It works well for photography and everyday use too. Plus, it is also not as expensive as some of the other collections out there.
You can find the dinner plates {HERE}, the salad plates {HERE}, the bowls {HERE} and the soup bowls – which I also have – {HERE}. They even have mugs too that I’m planning on buying soon that you can find {HERE}.
As for the napkins, I had previously purchased them from Sur La Table and you might notice them in other tablescapes or a lot of my food photos. You can find them {HERE}. I’ve found that it’s always worth spending a little more on linens to get the relaxed, vintage look I’m going for.
The chairs are the chairs we use for our patio. They’re the same chairs you’ve probably seen in the barn from time to time too. I’ve purchased two sets of them because they work so well for us and hold up to outdoor weather. They are a steal for four chairs. You can find them {HERE}.
The wine glasses are our’s from when we got married. They always work so well this time of year with the light gold rim around the top and they make me happy because our anniversary is in the fall. It’s been a crazy 11 years together and I don’t think that we would have it any other way.
Lastly, the silverware I used in the fall harvest tablescape is again recycled from last year. It’s a gold tinted cutlery set that you can find it {HERE}.
