If you’ve followed us from the start then you know our front porch is a special spot. In fact, it’s part of the reason we fell in love with this house. Each season I try to make it feel like an extension of our home, and while I think it’s beautiful all year round, you really can’t beat the fall front porch decor. We hope that this year’s fall front porch decor really inspires you to love home during this season of coziness.
I’ve had the porch decorated for about a month now but have been slow of showing it off. I keep thinking that I can just slow the season down a bit if I don’t show it off too much. In a year when our homes have become even more essential to all of us, I just want the warmest of seasons to last a little longer. But another Nature has called my bluff. The trees here have turned and have been dropping leaves, and even my mums are starting to show their age already.
So, without further procrastination, here is the fall front porch decor for the farmhouse. I hope that it will inspire you this year, next year and perhaps even for a few years to come to make your house a haven in this crazy, beautiful world.
The fall front porch colors
This year, I wanted the colors on the front porch just to feel really robust and deep. I wanted to have reds and burgundies throughout similar to how the fall tablescale felt. I pulled all of that in through some real flowers on my front door wreaths and some burgundy mums.
As for the pumpkins, I added in a few pumpkins with reddish undertones and then kept everything else to a nice rich color palette with dark greens, creams and a few lighter pumpkins to make sure it didn’t feel too heavy.
The one color I stayed away from on the front porch this season was yellow. I know that yellow is a huge fall color but I often feel like the yellow mums are just so bright. In a sea of deeper colors this season, they would have stuck out like a sore thumb.
That said, I did use gold and you can see that in the broom corn throughout the porch.
The textures
When making a space feel cozy, I like to focus on texture. There’s something about textured blankets and florals that really make me feel comfortable. Maybe it’s because they seem a little imperfect? As a girl who appreciates straight lines, sometimes a little wildness helps to even out the structure.
Whatever it is, I always feel more comfortable in a home or a space that plays up the textures.
The broom corn definitely adds the texture I was looking for and it was really a bit of a magical find. I had gone to the nursery in search of regular corn, but when I saw the broom corn it was kismet. It was messy, wild and full of life. We added it around the front door and on some of our posts. I would have done more but I bought the last of the stock they had.
The mums also add some texture with the petals and mounding. I used large ones by the doors and on the steps to create an entrance that shouts, “Hello!”
Lastly, I added in some warty pumpkins this year for the ultimate texture. Warty pumpkins are actually called Knucklehead Pumpkins and are part of a hybrid line called Superfreak that was actually breed in Holland, Michigan.
Some things I left the same
This season I tried to focus on not buying anything new unless it was living (plants, pumpkins and my corn counts as living). Instead, I tried to use pieces we always have.
We have our rockers, which I left alone. I’m using the same pillows on them that I used this summer. I swapped out the pillows and the blanket on the swing for a pillow and blanket that I had inside.
The sign is the same sign hanging that I added at the end of the summer. I just love it and it’s such a happy way to welcome friends and guests. You can find it {HERE}.
For the front door, I kept the same wreaths that I use in the spring and summer, but gave them a fall front porch decor makeover. I added in some faux florals I had, some dried florals and even some fresh florals that lasted a few weeks in the cool, fall weather. You can find the wreaths that I use as a base {HERE}.
I added a rug under the door mat that had been inside – and I thought ruined – too. The rug is actually from the Magnolia line at Target and I bought it earlier this year. But, Daisy, being a puppy soon used it as a potty spot. The rug is jute and if you’ve ever had a jute rug you know washing is not recommended. Well…
I washed mine. I tried spot cleaning it and it didn’t work.
And guess what? Well I ruined it of course. Large fibers were coming out throughout. Instead of throwing it away, I decided to covet the bad spot and use it outside. Now I kind of thing it was a happy accident…kind of.
You can find the rug {HERE} in a 5×7. Just keep it away from puppies and the washing machine. 🙂 You can find the welcome mat {HERE}.
As for the other striped rugs, I’ve had them for awhile. I’ve even had one outside here for more than a year and it’s held up remarkably well. I love how they break the space up and give the front porch dimension and zones. We have the grey and ivory version, which appears to be out of stock, but they also have it in ivory and navy which I love! You can find it here {HERE}.
Lastly, our planters are the same. The black planters by the front door are out of stock right now but very similar planters can be found {HERE} and i love that it’s made with 100 percent recycled plastic. It also has a 10-year warranty and won’t fade. We also do have these ones on the back porch if you’re looking for something in a less expensive price range {HERE}.
We’ve had the black planters by the swing for years now and brought them with from the old house. They still sell them though and you can find them {HERE}. These have truly been with us for about 5 years so we know they stand the test of time.
As for other planters, I bough these pickling crocks this spring and I love them for plants! In fact my petunias did so well in them that I left them for the fall and dress the pot up with a small, white pumpkin. You can find a 5-gallon pickling crock to use as a planter {HERE} and a 3-gallon pickling crock {HERE}.
So what do you think, friends? Do you like it? I’d love to hear in the comments below.
Thank you so much for visiting today! We hope that you’ll come back and visit us again here at Sugar Maple Farmhouse.
I can only wish to have a home with a porch. You’ve done such a great job.
Love & regards
