My Homemade Cherry Cobbler recipe is made from scratch is a delicious way to use up your cherry harvest or all those fresh cherries from the grocery store. Save it so you can make it when the cherries are in season!
This year was the first year we received a harvest from our dwarf cherry trees and it was amazing. We planted our little trees back in 2020 and three our of the four lived and two of the trees produced enough fruit that I was able to make Homemade Cherry Cobbler made from scratch!
When I first bought all the fruit trees and laid out the plans for our garden, I envisioned a day when the garden itself would work more like a food forrest in permaculture concepts. And while we don’t have that exactly, we do have a beautiful variety of fruit trees and summer vegetables as well as plenty of herbs and hopefully someday grapes. (The apple trees should giveway to our first harvest this year too.)
My cherry mix
There’s two parts to making any kind of cobbler. The first part is the fruit mix. In this case, I used the cherries from our Dwarf Cherry Trees, which have a tart but slightly sweet flavor. I’ve found that slightly tart fruits tend to make better cobblers and pies because the fruits that are already very sweet get a little too sweet for me. However, you can use your favorite kind of cherry for my Homemade Cherry Cobbler recipe. Either tart or sweet will work.
To begin you will need to pit 4 cups of cherries. I have a simple cherry pitter similar to this one {HERE}. Although, it does look like there are some fancier ones on the market that will pit multiple cherries {HERE} or provide a nifty pit catcher {HERE}. As our cherry trees grow, I’ll have to invest in one of these.
Besides the cherries, there’s just a few other ingredients for making the mix including sugar, corn starch, vanilla extract, lemon juice and almond extract.
Making the cobbler for my recipe
My cobbler in my Homemade Cherry Cobbler recipe is a little more cake-like. My family loves it and it soaks up all of the cherry juice nicely. It will actually bake into the cherry mix and it’s a bit like eating a soft, sugar cookie with the cherry filling. It’s incredibly delicious! It was gone within 24 hours of making it. Kevin continued to eat it out of the baking dish with a fork all night. (He tends to snack at odd hours. We call him the raccoon.)
This is also simply made and does not contain any eggs. It simply uses flour, sugar, milk and butter. I also flavor it with a bit of vanilla to give it more of a dessert flavor. Together with the cherry topping (and a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream) it’s truly an unbeatable dessert.
All of this gets mixed together in a bowl and then spooned onto the cherry mix like drop biscuits. There is no evening it out or making it smooth. Just mix, drop and bake.
Tips for making my Homemade Cherry Cobbler recipe
- As I mentioned, I use a more tart cherry for this recipe but you can use whatever you like. You can also use frozen cherries to make the cherry filling mix, which can be helpful if you want to make this Homemade Cherry Cobbler recipe in the off season.
- You can substitute the milk with any other kind of “milk” that can be used for baking. I always use whole milk because that is what we drink. But skim or any plant based milk that can be baked can be used too. Although, if you’re not adverse to it I do recommend whole milk for the texture, volume and flavor.
- A cherry pitter is a must for this if you are working with fresh cherries. Again, this one {HERE} is similar to mine. It took me about 10 minutes to pit my 4 cups.
- I recommend using a white CorningWare dish to bake this in. I think I received mine for our wedding shower eons ago so I don’t have a link to it. However, this one {HERE} is similiar.
- I recommend making this fresh but you can try making this one day ahead of time and putting it in the refrigerator. Hold off on adding the topping to the cherry mix and put the baking dish together right before putting it in the oven.
- To save, cover the Homemade Cherry Cobbler and put it in the refrigerator. It will keep for about 72hours but it probably won’t last that long.

Yum, I just love cherry cobbler. This looks amazing. I will have to make it for the family.
This dessert is perfect for summer. Cherries are on sale right now too!
we are still getting delish cherries in the stores in our area so the next time i get them (just finished the last lot), i need to make this.. never attempted it before but your recipe looks so amazing
That is so cool that you made this from cherries in your backyard! I love cherries too and will give this recipe a try!
I love the fact that you were able to use fruit from your own yard. I’d love to make a keto version of this — do you think it would work with almond flour?
If almond flour bakes up in a similar fashion, then yes, you should be able to use it.
Probably. Generally if you can substitute almond flour for more things in baking, I would say yes. The problem with making it Keto would more than likely be all the sugar though.

Perfect!
I have only made cobbler with strawberries or blueberries. This sounds delicious! Haven’t made cobbler in a while either. Cherry is the perfect fruit for this!
That cherry cobbler looks both sweet and tart, a delicious combination!
Yum. This recipe reminds me of my grandmother. She used to make homemade cherry cobbler all the time.
I love that this has a cake-like texture. I want to try it with both cherries and blueberries.
This recipe reminds me of when my mother and I used to make cherry pie for the family on thanksgiving, or when a family gets together. I didn’t realize that you could make a cobber out of cherries. Thanks for sharing the recipe with us.
So yummy !!! Since it’s finally below 100* I turned on the oven and whipped this out. Easy to make and unbeatable for taste! The ONLY problem is having to buy the sour cherries ( no trees for me!) because the cost is outrageous. Over $6.00 a can OMG! I splurged and bought enough to mix with fresh cherries to make two. Gonna bring this to a picnic where I want to impress all the award-winning Granny’s!
I hope those award winning Grannies loved it! Thank you for visiting!
