Decorating our fireplace mantle each fall has always been a highlight of decorating our home. With the fireplace in the family room truly being the heart of our home, it’s been a joy to see how we can change it up and bring it to life each season. However, this season – per my kids’ request – I skipped my normal autumn décor and dove right into Halloween with some witchy Halloween fireplace decor.
The driving force behind the witchy Halloween fireplace
When the kids requested more Halloween and less fall, I was originally a little frustrated. Halloween decor has always felt too gory or too cutesy for me. However, I loved Halloween when I was their age. We would spend hours trick-or-treating at my grandma’s house with pillowcases in hand and then go back for a cozy meal and to trade candy. It was a magical holiday in a way and since we don’t have trick-or-treater since we don’t live in a neighborhood, I decided I owed them a little bit of that Halloween magic right in the heart of our home and decorate a Halloween fireplace
Instead of just pulling together something with the Halloween decor we had in boxes in the basement, I decided to create a witches and wizards theme for the Halloween decor around our home. I wanted to make the Halloween fireplace a little window into a witchy world, and make it seem like you were looking at a fireplace that might be in the home of a Halloween traditional witch.
Creating our witchy Halloween fireplace décor
To start, I knew I needed a few things to make this feel a little more authentic to me. I thought about what a witch might have in her home and pictured books stacked up to the ceiling, spider webs and spiders crawling around and potions. After all, if you’re conjuring up some trouble, best to have all the ingredients right at your fingertips.
I wanted it to feel a bit cluttered – like there were spell books and potions anywhere there was space. Perhaps the witch in my mind lived in a much smaller house and needed to use all her mantle space.
However, I focused on the same elements I use when decorating any space.
First and foremost, I wanted to create balance. With so much going on, I didn’t want one side to feel like it was heavier than the other. It helped to also create the fact that my witch was using all the space she had for storing the bits of her home.
Next, I focused on color, repeating colors of the same tone – in this case black – throughout the design.
Then, I created texture with the spider webs and curly willow branches. I was happy to add those since I love decorating with natural decor. Unlike last’s year’s fall fireplace, this year’s Halloween decor has a lack of it.
Lastly, I created height in the space with the spiders, cobwebs and bats. And, grounded the space with decor at the base.
Elements in the Witch’s Halloween fireplace
Some of the pieces I purchased and will be able to use again, like the Witches broom (Michael’s), the bats, the grapevine spiders, the frog and even the bugs in the little potion jars.
Other pieces I made. The potion jars were all made from materials from the craft store and I have a full tutorial {HERE}. That includes a free PDF for the labels on the front of the potion bottles. My daughter and I had a fun afternoon making these and she was excited to be a part of creating the space.
Then there were elements that were a combination of things I already owned and things I purchased to fill in the gaps. The books are the best example of this. The ones flipped backwards are ones I already had – and they’re about random subjects. But I also purchased a few of the witchcraft books for fun. Although some of them – like the Green Witch – are really about the natural magic in herbs, flowers and essential oils. I’m actually really excited to read that one.
The black candlesticks and the wood bucket we already owned so it was nice to have those fit the theme. Same with the wooden star. I actually purchased it for the 4th of July, but it fits into the Wiccan theme. TIP! When thinking about decorating for the holidays, think about items in your house that can stretch for the holidays. For instance, black pottery is very on trend right now. That’s also perfect for Halloween!

Such a cool Halloween decor. I love it, and I will do my decor this weekend.
Awesome decor! All those creepy crawlies would definitely freak me out one night lol but my nephews will definitely love them.
I love this! I used to love decorating the house as a kid with the fake spider webs – now my puppy would eat it and I don’t have a fireplace anyway. Going on my interest for when I finally have a house <3
I love how spooky this is! I usually only decorate the fireplace for Christmas, but maybe I need do Halloween too!
It looks great! We used to do a similar theme (but not as well) when our kids were younger. I miss having Halloween parties for them!

That looks so good. We don’t have our Halloween decorations up yet.
