I know most bloggers are rushing headlong into Christmas décor right now, but I am over here clutching pumpkins and broom corn with every fiber of my being. I believe in appreciating the seasons for what they are and experiencing them slowly. My kids are still little, and they look forward to every holiday and I want them to appreciate them all too. And, I hate rushing over fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving and the beauty that comes with them. That means, our fall fireplace is going to be up until Thanksgiving dinner is done. Luckily, it’s perfect for Thanksgiving decor too.
For the fall fireplace this season, I had a few rules for myself. I could only use dried or fresh flowers, things I found in thrift stores or what I already owned. I didn’t want to buy any more plastic this season and was trying to cut down on décor costs all around with the holidays coming.
The fall florals
I used the same exact florals for the fireplace that I used for the Harvest Table décor. Literally they are the same flowers that were on that table. They were too pretty to throw away and it felt like such a waste. Instead, I dried them and added them to the mantle.
I love the rustic, slightly messy appearance with the branches going in different directions. I adore the texture and the way it all feels so natural.
Like the harvest table and the fall front porch, I wanted to play up burgundy again for the fall fireplace. However, that’s difficult with my fireplace. The brick on it is a red-grey and the mantle is a grey too. Things tend to fade into it a bit too much for my liking. I’m planning on painting it, maybe after Christmas, since it just a brick façade and not even full brick.
Pumpkins belong in Thanksgiving décor too
I added in small, white pumpkins called Baby Boo pumpkins to the mantle too. This did a couple of things.
- I believe fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving décor should include pumpkins. So, they helped the fall fireplace span the season and the holidays.
- They helped to offset the grey mantel and helped the arrangement to stand out.
On the hearth I added a Snowball pumpkin, two Casper pumpkins and a Cinderella pumpkin or Rouge Vif d’Etampes to carry the look and balance out the mantle.
My vintage fall fireplace finds
Overall this season, I knew I wanted the fireplace to feel warm, cozy and a bit romantic. To me that meant adding candles to the mantle and due to my rule, I needed to have them already or find them at a thrift store.
One of the things that I love about Grand Rapids is that it has an abundance of thrift and vintage stores. Sometimes you find just want you’re looking for, other times you don’t. I set out to find various brass candlesticks and completely lucked out!
I have 10 vintage candlesticks on the fireplace now and I paid less than $25 for all of them. They’re various heights and sizes. Some of them were sold as pairs and some of them were sold alone. I just love the character and warmth they give to the mantle and I know that I will cherish them for many holidays to come. They’re truly décor classics.
One the hearth I added in two wooden pillar candles that I already had. I found these last year and like that they’re weightier. They helped to balance out the pumpkins on the other side of the hearth.
So, what stayed the same?
The only thing that stayed the same from previous seasons this year was our mirror. It is actually the mirror that used to be in our bathroom and after we remodeled that, we put it in the basement. I found it last spring and decided to add it to the fireplace.
I like that it’s the same tone as the brass candlesticks and that it has a slightly modern feel to balance out all the traditional elements. You can find the mirror {HERE}.
So that’s it, friends! What do you think of the fall fireplace? Do you think this will work for our Thanksgiving décor too?
