The delicious way to make edible moss
Personally, I don’t like things made out of plain egg whites or a bunch of random sugar on my plate that doesn’t taste like anything. So I went and tried to find a way to make edible moss that tastes good. And you know what I found? Making moss this way not only looks good, but it is also easier than some of the other ways out there. Here is how to make edible moss for cakes and cupcakes.
- Make a batch of cupcakes.
- Dye them various shades of green and green mixed with yellow and brown.
- When they cool, tear them apart. Viola! Instant moss.
The type of cupcakes to use
When it comes to the cupcakes, you can use any kind you prefer. You can use a boxed cupcake recipe and make it really easy on yourself. Or you can make something like my vanilla cake recipe a cupcake recipe and use that. You can even use ca chocolate cake recipe and dye that if you prefer chocolate flavoring. Learning how to make edible moss this way is a great hack to have if you love to bake or love decorating cakes. I used this method in my Tree Stump Yule Log Cake, which is pictured below.
Working with the dye
When it comes to the dye for the cupcakes, you can use whatever brand you prefer. you can use the brands that tout natural dye formulas or you can even use natural dye like Spirulina, matcha and other edible elements that will tint the cupcakes. Just be aware that using those ingredients as dye will change the flavor of the cupcakes and you might not be able to achieve the deep colors you are hoping for without using a lot of them.
The cupcakes I have pictured were made using gel food coloring. My favorite combination is actually the darkest cupcakes, which ended up a little bit swirled with other colors. I feel like they have the best “moss” look.
How to make edible moss
- To start, mix up the cupcake better.
- Then begin with your lightest color. this can be a light green color, you can mix in a little yellow or even a touch of brown. My lightest color is a few drops of the food coloring.
- Fill three cupcake holes with that color.
- Then make the batter a little darker. Use more green and add a tint of one of the other colors. Fill another three cupcake holes.
- Work to continue making the batter darker with each set of three cupcakes. My final cupcake included a lot of green food dye and a bit of brown too to get it that dark.
- Bake per the cupcake directions.
- When cooled, tear the cupcakes a part and store the moss in an airtight container. I made this batch one day and didn’t use it for three days. It was still perfectly good so you can make this a little in advance.
