My Homemade, easy Salisbury steak recipe is a delicious, classic, American recipe. The flavorful ground beef patties are smothered in a rich, savory, mushroom gravy that make this recipe pure comfort food. Try it tonight and save it to Pinterest so you can always find it.
Last week I mentioned that I have been craving nostalgic comfort food. And well, this week that trend seems to be continuing with my easy Salisbury steak recipe. While I was growing up, we did not have a lot of money and my dad always worked until about 9 p.m. at night. There were nights were my mom would treat us to TV dinners, which were considered a little pricer then (hence the word treat). My favorite TV dinner was a Salisbury steak meal that came with mashed potatoes and corn. I probably would have eaten that every night if she would have let me.
As I grew older and grew out of TV dinners, I think the only other place I ate Salisbury steak was my cafeteria – whether it was elementary school or college. But it has always been one of those foods that I remember fondly and connect with home. I decided I wanted to make it for my children recently as an easy dinner during this busy season of life. Not only did they love it, but I also found it to be the same comfort food I remembered as a child – just with a fresh, homemade twist.
What is Salisbury steak
Salisbury Steam came about during the American Civil War. It was invented by Dr. James Henry Salisbury. He created it as a solution for soldiers who were having digestive issues. Originally, the dish consisted of a blend of ground beef along with ground chicken or pork. You can read more about it {HERE}
Making the patties
I made these easy Salisbury steak patties very similar to how one would make hamburger patties. I used ground beef, an egg, onion, Panko bread crumbs, fresh garlic, fresh thyme, oregano, Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce. I like to use my hands to combine all of this so I can really work the ingredients together. If that bothers you, you can also use a wooden spoon.
Then form each patty into a hamburger-like shape. Before cooking, I also dip both sides of the patties in flour to help thicken the gravy and add a little bit of a nice, brown crust to the patties. Once the patties are done, I push my finger into the center of each to keep them from thickening too much during the cooking process.
Cooking the patties and the sauce for the easy Salisbury Steak
Once the patties are ready, they cook in a sauté pan with a little olive oil over a medium to high heat for a few minutes per side. (Step-by-step in the recipe below.) Then I remove them from the pan and set them aside.
It is now time to make the sauce for the Salisbury steak recipe. In that mix of flavor that is already in the pan, I add in onions, garlic and mushrooms. This all cooks down for a few minutes before I add butter. That melts and then flour is added to help make a roux. This will thicken the sauce a little for you without it getting overly thick. Beef stock, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce and sea salt and pepper are all simmered together to make the body of the sauce.
Saving & Reheating Leftovers
If you have leftovers from my easy Salisbury steak recipe, you can save them for up to four days in an air tight container in the refrigerator. Reheat them in the microwave for 1-2 minutes or until the center is warm. You can also reheat the patties and sauce in a sauté pan over low heat for about 7 minutes or until the center is warm.

Easy Salisbury steak recipe
Equipment
- 1 Large sautée pan
Ingredients
Ingredients for the salisbury steak patties
- 1 lb ground beef, at least 85 percent lean
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1/2 a yellow onion, diced small or grated
- 1/2 cup Panko breadcrumbs
- 2 large cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp fresh thyme, minced
- 1 tbsp fresh oregano, minced
- 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup flour
Ingredients for the easy Salisbury Steak sauce
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1 cup yellow onions, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 6 - 8 oz sliced Baby Bella mushrooms
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 1/2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef stock
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Sea salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley and thyme for topping.
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, onion, Panko breadcrumbs, garlic, thyme, oregano, Dijon mustard ketchup and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well with a wooden spoon or your hands.
- Form the ground beef mixture into 4-5 patties and then dip both side of each patty into the flour. Push your thumb lightly into the center of each patty to keep them from shrinking and becoming too thick as they cook.
- Add a large sauté pan to the stove over medium heat. Add in the olive oil and when it is shimmering, place the patties in the pan. Make sure none of them are touching. Cook on each side for 2 minutes and then remove them from the pan and set them aside.
- Reduce the heat to low-medium and add the onions to the pan. Cook for 2 minutes or until they begin to soften and become translucent. Stir continuously. Then add in the garlic and cook it for about 1 minute or until it becomes fragrant.
- Next, add in the mushrooms and cook for 2 minutes. Stirring regularly. Then add in the butter and continue to sauté everything together until the butter melts.
- Once the butter has melted, add in the 2 1/2 tablespoons of flour and mix well while cooking for 2 minutes.
- Add in beef stock. Scape the bottom of the pan for about 30 seconds after to deglaze the pan. Reduce the heat to low.
- Then add in the tablespoon Dijon mustard and the half tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce. If your flour looks a little clumpy still, gently whisk the mixture to remove the lumps. Then let the sauce simmer for 5 minutes to thicken. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- Add the steaks back to the pan. Spoon the gravy over them and then cover the pan. Simmer for 10 minutes or until the Salisbury steaks are cooked through.
- Serve over mashed potatoes or egg noddles with fresh parsley and thyme.
