Does any side dish really beat mashed potatoes? These Golden Mashed Potatoes are one of those side dishes that I love to have with anything that has a sauce or a gravy. They are simple enough for weeknight dinners when you want something homemade to go with a meal and they still taste delicious that they would be appropriate for holidays too. This easy mashed potatoes recipe is truly a classic that just belongs on the dinnertime table.
The right potatoes to use
For my Golden Mashed Potatoes recipe you will need three pounds of potatoes of Yukon Gold Potatoes. They have a wonderful buttery flavor that is already naturally occurring and lends itself beautifully to the fished easy mashed potatoes recipe. They also have a great balance of moisture and starch, unlike a russet potato that can retain too much water. I peeled mine for this easy mashed potatoes recipe because my family prefers them without the skin, but if you like a more rustic mashed potato you can leave the skin on too.

Making them creamy
To make the golden mashed potatoes creamy, all you need to do is to make sure to add milk and butter. My recipe calls for 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of whole milk. I then tend to mash with a hand masher and mix with a wooden spoon until I get my potatoes to the texture I prefer. You can also use a hand blender if you like.
Basics of flavoring
The golden mashed potatoes recipe is one that uses the basic potato flavor for the recipe itself. I do not add a lot additional herbs or spices. Instead I just use that whole milk, salted butter and some coarse sea salt and fresh cracked black pepper. If you want you can add some garlic too, but I really made this recipe to be an easy mashed potatoes recipe that will go with a variety of gravies – no matter how they are flavored. Creating something with true, simple flavors just produces the best outcome when you are enjoying them with a more flavorful main dish.

Tips for making my creamy Golden Mashed Potatoes
- Make sure to immediately add that butter and milk after draining the potatoes. The heat from them will help pull the full recipe together.
- When it comes to adding the salt, make sure to use coarse sea salt and add it teaspoon by teaspoon. Salt in mashed potatoes is fairly subjective and you do not want to add too much for your palate. If you prefer more salt than the recipe requires feel free to add more until you are happy.
- Do use that fresh cracked pepper. It is much better for flavoring than a table pepper.
- Make sure to test for doneness. You want to be able to easily pierce the potatoes with a fork once time is up. If you cannot do that then you should give them more time.
- Again, I use a hand potato masher for mashing. I believe it creates a more rustic mashed potato because it still leaves some bits and pieces. If you prefer to just make a really smooth mashed potato, you can use the hand blender.
Leftovers and reheating
To save any golden mashed potato recipe leftover, place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. You can reheat them in the microwave or place them in a baking dish and bake them until warm at 350 degrees.
