My Roast Beef Crostini is a simple appetizer with a delicious cream cheese spread, caramelized onions and horseradish mustard cream. Save this recipe to Pinterest so you can always find it!
When it comes to appetizers, I always find simple is best. BUT, I like a lot of flavor in each little bite too. These Roast Beef Crostini appetizers deliver on all of that with a beautiful layering of flavors that will be loved by all your party guests.
The first layer
I start with an herb cream cheese spread on these to set the stage for the Roast Beef Crostini appetizer. I love a good cream cheese spread and I find that this one with fresh chives and fresh oregano really helps to compliment the beef. You simply mash together three tablespoons of chopped chives with two tablespoons of minced oregano and then add in some coarse sea salt and pepper.
The Mustard Horse Radish Cream Sauce
I make this next even though it is not next in the layering of the Roast Beef Crostini. It is simple to mix all the ingredients together here which include sour cream, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, stone ground mustard and prepared horse radish. Then you can refrigerate it until you are ready to use it.
Toasting the bread
Once the cream cheese mix and horseradish cream are made, I will toast up the French bread. I like to cut this diagonally between 1/2 inch and 1 inch thick. This is a hearty appetizer that is piled high so thin bread might get flimsy for people. The bread gets brushed with extra virgin olive oil and then broiled for 3-5 minutes. Mine in the photo is closer to a 4 and a half minute cook time. Keep an eye on your’s to make sure they don’t get overly charred.
Caramelizing the onions
I love a good caramelized onion and I thought they would make a nice contrast on the Roast Beef Corstini appetizer to the cream cheese and the horse radish mushroom sauce. Plus they go perfectly with roast beef. To start, extra virgin olive oil gets added to a sauté pan and when it is hot, the onions are added. Then they are caramelized down over the course of about 20 minutes with butter.
Now, technically full caramelization is about 40 minutes but this 20 minute version is a quick version and it works perfectly for the Roast Beef Crostini appetizers. The only time I spend 40 minutes caramelizing is when I am making French Onion Soup.
Tips for making my Roast Beef Crostini appetizers
- The recipe will make a range of servings depending on how you cut the bread. I can get 16-20 pieces out of one loaf of French bread.
- For the cream cheese spread, the fresh herbs are really the best so try to find those. Chives are one of the easiest herbs to grow so as long as you have not’ have a big, extended cold snap someone you know might have some growing!
- The horseradish cream has a range on the amount. This is so you can make it per taste. Of course, if you and your guests love horseradish you can add more. I just suggest tasting in between so you don’t end up with something too spicy for you.
- You can make these crostini roast beef appetizers in advance like the morning of an event. I would covered them lightly and put them back in the refrigerator.
- I do think they are still good the next day but that is probably not how I would want to serve them to guests so I do not recommend assembling them further ahead of time.
- You could make the cream cheese spread, the horseradish cream and the onions the day before though. Then assemble everything before serving.
- I do like to eat this with a knife and fork since it is piled high. You can decided if you want to offer those to guests or keep it as finger food.
- If you have leftovers keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will stay tasty for about two days.

Roast Beef Crostini appetizer
Equipment
- Baking sheet
- Saute pan
- 2 bowls for mixing cream cheese and horseradish cream
Ingredients
Ingredient for the Bread
- 1 loaf French Bread, sliced diagonally into about 1/2 inch to 1 inch pieces
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1/2 cup lightly chopped arugula
- 3/4 lb sliced roast beef
- Additional coarse sea salt and fresh cracked black pepper for topping to taste
- Additional fresh oregano and chives for topping
Ingredients for the Herb Cream Cheese
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 3 tbsp chopped fresh chives
- 2 tbsp minced fresh oregano
- 1/2 tsp coarse sea salt
- 1/4 tsp fresh cracked black pepper
Ingredients for the Horseradish Mustard Cream
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 5 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1/8 cup mayonaise
- 1/8 cup stone ground mustard
- 1 - 2 tbsp prepared horseradish This is to taste preference. Add 1 tablespoon first. If you want more, go up in 1 tsp increments
Ingredients for the caramelized onions
- 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 2 large yellow onions
- 4 tbsp butter
Instructions
- Mix together the ingredients for the cream cheese spread and set it aside. Then mix together the ingredients for the horseradish cream and set that aside.
- Slice the French bread and place the pieces on a baking sheet. Brush the top sides with the extra virgin olive oil. Then turn the oven onto broil and broil them for 3- 5 minutes. Keep an eye on them so they don't burn. I like mine lightly toasted. When they are done, remove them from the oven and set them aside.
- For the caramelized onions, add the extra virgin olive oil to a sauté pan on the stove over medium heat. When it is shimmering, add the onions and stir continuously for 5 minutes. Then turn the heat to low and add the butter. Stir continuously until it melts and then you can stir regularly. When they are golden and limp (about 20 minutes total), you can remove them from the heat.
- Make the Roast Beef Crostini by adding on a smear of cream cheese spread, a little bit of arugula, a spoonful of the caramelized onions, a slice of roast beef and top each with a little bit of the horseradish cream.
- Serve with additional coarse sea salt and fresh cracked black pepper to taste. Top with additional fresh oregano and fresh chives if desired.
