These clothes for gardening are the best clothing for gardening that I have been able to find. They hold up and they are cute too!
My first few garden seasons here I spent a lot of time digging in the dirt in my regular jeans. And over and over again I would be shocked when they got holes in them or ripped at the seams. Turns out, regular, every day jeans are not meant to be clothes for gardening and for the labor that gardening involves. Bending, squatting and spending a lot of time on my knees does not help them hold up.
This season I set our to find the best clothing for gardening and I’m thrilled to say I found some things! Not only did I find clothes for gardening that hold up through the dirt and the bending and squatting, but they are also cute too.
Overalls win the day
When it comes to clothes for gardening, overalls are my favorite. Due to this, you will see a lot of them reflected here. I love them for a few reasons. 1. My legs are generally covered. I don’t like gardening in shorts or dresses because I just don’t want to feel anything crawling up my legs. Even in the heat of summer, I prefer them. Plus, they’re also great for doing donkey chores.
My three favorite pairs here a bit of an investment, but they’ve held up well and are literally made for this. No holes anywhere and they also clean really well. They are literally the best clothing for gardening. They are:
- Heirloom Gardening Bib Overalls {HERE}. I have these in Henna and a size small. They seem to fit large and usually I’d be more comfortable in a medium but they fit well in this size. These are in the photo above.
- Square Overalls with tie {HERE}. I have these in burgundy (which is a purple-ish) and a size extra small. I was shocked when I put this size on in the store but again, it fits well. These are in the photo below. The first set is from early in the season and the second one is from later with our Farmstand.
- Ribstop Bib Overalls {HERE}. I have these in military green and a size small. These are just a tad tight in my bottom due to the inseam. However, they’re comfortable, functional and I haven’t had any issues with wear and tear. I don’t have a photo in these yet.
On my feet
I’ve tried a lot of different types of gardening shoes and boots when to comes to clothes for gardening. I’ve worn Hunter boots, which are cute but make my feet hurt and crease after overuse. They also let in water. I’ve also tried BOGS, which are supposed to be the gold standard, but I found I had water issues in them after just a month or two and they also creased oddly. Shockingly, they also gave me a blister.
My favorite shoes, the ones I’ve been wearing this season and have held up without blisters on wear and tear, are these ones {HERE}. I have these in Mustard Yellow and plan to buy another color too. Merry People essentially sells rain boots, but I’ve found that they work so well as garden shoes and recommend them as the best clothing for gardening. You can see them in the photos below (and my burgundy overalls).
Clothes for Gardening: Shirts
For the spring and summertime, I like to wear tank tops, especially with overalls. These ones {HERE} are my favorites when it comes to clothes for gardening. I wear a size small and they don’t creep or ride up. I appreciate that they stay put throughout the bending and even when I’m shoveling for donkey chores. When the weather is a little chillier, I will layer and wear a button down like this one {HERE} or this one {HERE} over the tank or sometimes just over the overalls. If it is in the 40’s, like early or late in the season, I will generally layer with a flannel.
On my head
I will tell you that I don’t wear hats as often as I should. I have large ears that stick out a bit and sometimes hats just rub on them oddly. However, I do have a few that I like to wear as long as I’m not going to be wearing them too long. This one {HERE} is probably my favorite. I like it because it has a wide brim to help shield my face from the sun and is comfortable. I have a few versions that I included in the collection of the best clothing for gardening above but I like the look of the thin string. You can see it here in this picture of the kids and I from 2021.

You have some awesome choices here. I will have to show my mom. She gardens a ton!
I need a pair of those boots. I want to garden year-round and those are a must.
My girlfriend’s gardening shirt has a hole in it. Well, maybe it’s time for me to get her a new one here.
You definitely want something comfy to wear when gardening, and the overalls do seem like the best choice
I love the overalls. But when I think of gardening, not professionally, I think of something casual that you don’t mind getting dirty. You also need a wide brim hat and good water proof shoes.
I’m obsessed with the colors you got there for the overalls. They all looked stunning and so comfy to wear while gardening. Your garden looked massive and pretty, too.
This post was made for my aunt who lives in her garden. Thank you for sharing, I know exactly what her birthday and Christmas gifts will be this year!

I have never worn overalls before but I lost a lot of weight and I think I can pull them off now. They sound like a great choice for gardening!
The perfect use of overalls, and the gardening boots are really cute too!
I shy away from wearing overalls out on a normal day, but I like wearing them. This gives me a good excuse to wear them without being concerned about fashion.
I always make sure I use good gardening boots but aside from that all others just anything comfortable… Gotta get me some overalls to complete the look.
I have been looking for a few good pair of over-alls. I love them so much they work well for just about any type of farm work.
I love your choice of clothing. Overalls are the best choice to wear when you are doing all the different tastes on the farm.
Loving the variety of options there. ‘ve not gardened for ages. I’m looking forward to when we move to be able to work on my garden with the kids. Over-alls work well!
I don’t garden, but I’m loving the overalls and big sun hat combo! It’s such a cute look.
These outfits are all so cute but more importantly, they are functional as well. Great for working out in the yard and gaden.
The overalls are very comfy and cute. I think they can also be great casual wears.
I never know what to wear when gardening. These are awesome ideas!
