Right on schedule crisp, fall air is moving in at the farm. I always imagine this season as moving slower but yet here we are and it’s almost the middle of September already. Even without the business of fall sports and activities this year, the days are passing by much too quickly for my liking.
We had so much work to do on the farm this spring and summer, that I really want fall to be about enjoyment for us as a family. And in an effort to get my family to slow down, and enjoy the land we have here on the farm, Kevin and I recently created a backyard fire pit area in the garden that I’ve had in my head for several months now.
It’s a simple space really, but one that will serve us well through the fall. Above all, the backyard fire pit space gives us a place to sit back, relax and watch the sun set. And that’s really exactly what we wanted.
Centering the space
We created the backyard fire pit area from a metal ring from Tractor Supply that you can find {HERE} and a cooking grate, which I can’t seem to find on Tractor Supply’s website. But, I did find it {HERE} for you on Amazon. The prices are comparable. If you want to order it all from Amazon, you can find a ring {HERE}. Just be sure to double check the size.
Once I had those two pieces, I decided to place the ring in the garden. We already had a stone base in the garden since we put stone between the raised garden beds this year. However, we have landscapers fabric below the stone to keep grass and weeds from growing through and I didn’t want that to burn in anyway. But, we really, really wanted the backyard fire pit space here so that we could see the sunsets.
To create more of a barrier, we added 16, 12×12 concrete patio paver stone squares to the backyard fire pit space. I was simple enough to do and they were really inexpensive! You can find them {HERE}.
Once we had the stones in place, we added the ring and the grate. Then I set about creating seating. Watch the video above to see the whole process from start to finish!
DIY backyard fire pit seating
We had two old Adirondack chairs that I added to the space. We actually bought these to stage our old house for moving to the farmhouse. We’ve left them out in all the elements year after year and while they are weathered, they’ve held up wonderfully. I love how they look now in the fire put space because I wanted the space to look a bit more rustic. It’s in the garden, surrounded by overgrown tomatoes, happy kale and pea gravel. I didn’t want anything too fussy. You can find the chairs {HERE}.
Once I had the chairs in place I wanted to add additional seating, but we didn’t have anything else. I thought that I could maybe find an old bench or two at one of the antique stores to supplement the fire pit space. After some searching, I came up empty and the only new things I could find cost over $200.
Instead of buying something new, Kevin and I decided to make a few benches out of extra scrap wood in the barn. He ended up making me two benches and a table to go between the Adirondack chairs. And really, each could sub as a table or a bench as needed.
To make them he used leftover 4×4’s for the legs, excess 1×4’s for the top and a random piece of wood to brace the top two pieces together. The wood was leftover from making our raised garden beds and the boarder for the garden, which I talk more about in this post {HERE}. And they worked perfectly!
You can see us build the whole backyard fire pit space -including the benches – on the video above!
You can make it too
The best thing about this project is that you can do it too. This is not something you need the space of a farm to make at home.
You just simply need 4 feet of space, the pavers and your ring. You don’t specifically need the metal grate for the top. In fact, Kevin removed that this weekend when we were roasting marshmallows.
Kevin swears you can put the pavers right over your grass, but keep in mind that you will still be smothering and burning the grass below. I would probably pull up the sod and make sure the space was level instead of just laying them on the grass.
What do you think of the backyard fire pit space? I’d love to hear below!
Thank you so much for visiting today, friends! We hope to see you again here at Sugar Maple Farmhouse.
That fire pit looks like so much fun and your views are so nice. I think a pit like this is great all year round and having a cookout is always fun and the food tastes better cooked outdoor
What an awesome place to gather!!!
Such a cute space!! Definitely looking to renovate our backyard soon, I want to recreate planters like yours! Thanks for the inspo!
I love how this came out. We might have to do something like this. We love making s’mores 😉
Between your firepit set up and that garden I’m green with envy (no pun intended). I hope we can make great use of our backyard as you have.
I’ve always fancied having a fire pit to sit around on a cooler night – I love have you have put this together it looks so welcoming.
Your backyard fire pit is dreamy! I love the benches and your view. 🙂
This looks absolutely delightful. We’re closing on a property next week that will allow us to have a small farm and to have a firepit. I can’t wait! I’ve been gathering inspiration from you guys for a while and I’m ready to turn my dreams into reality!
First of all, I ADORE your back yard with your garden. But now with the fire pit puts it over the top. What a pleasant area to enjoy family and friends.
I love your pit space. We have a pit that we built a stone wall you can sit on surrounding the firepit. Your seating looks way more comfy.
I looked around a lot this summer for a good fire pit solution and came up empty-handed. But this DIY fire pit is so great and I love that it won’t break the bank to make it either.
That is a very beautiful outdoor area. I also have a firepit in my yard. I think we put one up a couple of years ago. It’s been really nice to have too.
That backyard fire pit area is such a beautiful setup! I love that it’s “rain” safe so to speak, I see so many with a setup like this that doesn’t have wooden furniture. I’d love to have something like this when we buy our land.
Yas Queen! You did great! I built a backyard fire pit this summer with leftovers from the retaining wall. It was a huge feat, but I’m glad it’s done!
This would be an awesome project to take on. It is a great place to roast some hot dogs or hang out with friends.
I just want to get in there and roast some marshmallows. I love this space. I can see sitting around the fire pit on a fall evening.
Such a beautiful place. It’s so perfect for a relaxing moment with the whole family! Beautiful!
Wow it came out so well, I would love to sit here and chat with friends and family. Thanks for sharing
We got a firepit recently, and I would love to dress up the area. Thanks for the recommendations!
Every time I see one of your posts, I feel like moving to a farm! It’s amazing how much effort you’ve put into it!
This is so awesome! I really loved it!!
This space is so simple, but so beautiful! I need this in my life!
Wow, this is so amazing and definitely a perfect place to gather and make time to relax and to bond with your loved ones.
Such a beautiful spot! I love your sense of style and how you put a space together!
You have created such a nice place with these changes and created a fire pit place. BTW, your garden is beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this.
This is so wonderful! My husband has been dying to create a fire pit space in our backyard!
What an awesome space! This looks like a great place to gather together and enjoy a fire.
Oh wow I’m in love with the design of your backyard fire pit space! You really chose well. I would love to do this for our house too since we really can’t go out yet. Thanks so much for the guide!
Love your backyard so cute! My husband wanted to do a fire pit like that this year but he never got the chance. We ended up just buying one from Lowes.
That’s an amazing backyard! I love the fire pit and also the garden bed.
Your projects are always so beautiful. I’d like to have this in my backyard.
