I’m not a big breakfast person, but I am a big coffee-at-3-p.m.-with-a-side-of-something-sweet-person. When I can get it and let myself indulge, one of my favorite things to have with my coffee is sweet, flakey, buttery Blueberry Danish.
I recently made homemade puff pastry for my Caramelized Onion and Tomato Tart recipe. When I realized I could make something sweet with it too, I was thrilled. It’s such a versatile dough to be able to make since the pastry outcome can be sweet, savory or even a bit spicy if you want.

Homemade Blueberry Danish
Ingredients
- 1 puff pastry ( Check out mine to make one homemade!)
Blueberry Danish Filling
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tsp. fresh squeezed lemon juice
- 2 tsp. of vanilla
- 1/2 cup blueberries
Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 Tbsp. milk (I use whole milk)
Egg wash
- 1 egg
- 3 Tbsp. of water
Instructions
Blueberry Danish filling
- When the puff pastry is done chilling, pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees.
- While the puff pastry chills (if you're making homemade) combine the cream cheese, sugar, egg yolk, lemon juice and vanilla in a bowl. Blend together until there is a smooth texture and everything is well combined. I'd make this just before the puff pastry is ready. You don't want it sitting around since it has egg in it.
- Once the puff pastry is ready, cut our your squares for the pastry and lay them on a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
- Add a spoonful of filling to each puff pastry square. Top with as many blueberries and you can fit. Usually about five or six.
- Combine your egg and water and whisk it together. Using a basting brush, lightly baste just the pastry with your egg wash.
- Bake at 400 degrees for 15-18 minutes. My oven takes 18 minutes to cook through and give them that golden brown color. Watch your's since oven times vary. You want the pastry to be golden brown.
- While your Blueberry Danish cooks, make your glaze by combining the milk and the powdered sugar. Whisk until you get a gorgeous sugary, creamy glaze.
- When the Blueberry Danish is done. Allow to cool for about 5 minutes and then drizzle on the glaze.
- Serve immediately. You can store them in an airtight container for 24 hours and reheat in the microwave. BUT, these are best served fresh.

Love blueberry Danishes and this one looks AMAZING!! Making it soon!
Just made these and it was my first time feeling like I made puff pastry correctly!! So yummy — but I was wondering, when I baked it the outsides of the pastry were layered and baked perfectly (golden brown) but the inside, under the filling, was flat and sort of raw. Why do you think this is? Should I have just cooked longer, or maybe I put too much filling on and it weighed it down?
I made these and your homemade puff pastry (for the first time!!) which was so fun! Thanks! I was wondering — the puff pastry was so great on the edges and rose there, but in the center underneath the filling it was still pretty raw. I was wondering, should I have just cooked longer, or was there possibly another mistake with my puff pastry that made it bake that way underneath the filling?
Wonderful recipe. I’ve always wanted to make puff pastry but other recipes made it seem so hard. Thank you so much!!
These are AMAZING! My family loves them! So far I’ve made them with the cream cheese topping and a spoon of strawberry jam, and another time I just put blueberries on top of the cream cheese….AND I just tried it with plant based cream cheese and no one noticed 🙂 I’ve received nothing but compliments. One chef to another, I have to thank you for simplifying something that always seemed unreachable. You should post more creative ways to use the pastry puff….I’m actively looking!
