It’s been months since we started our basement renovation, which was supposed to take just 5 weeks. It’s now taken over 5 months. We’ve run into delays almost every step of the way and now they’re still telling us it’s going to be another month for our cabinet doors due to Covid labor shortages. However, I wanted to give you a sneak peak of the space and share the wood look tile that we decided to use for our flooring.
In partnership with Home Depot, we picked Vintage Lace ceramic wood look tile and have been so pleased with the decision!
Why porcelain wood look tile?
First there’s a few reasons we decided to go with a wood look tile in the basement.
- We used wood look tile in our previous home and love how it looked.
- Wood look tile feels safer to me for a basement because if it floods, the flooring would be ok. This way, I get the look of wood without the risk of actually installing wood in the space.
Vintage Lace wood look tile from at Home Depot
We decided to go with the Vintage Lace tile from Home Depot because I loved the overall look, I knew it would give to the space. I wanted to keep the flooring light. Basements can sometimes end up feeling dark and dingy and I wanted to make sure we didn’t run into that issue on this remodel. Light flooring was the way to go for me.
Plus, we have dark wood flooring on the other two levels of our home, and it shows EVERYTHING. Every speck of dust, every piece of lint…It even shows sweaty feet footprints. I will never use dark flooring again. For me, light flooring is the way to go.
I loved the way the Vintage Lace tile looked with its hints of brown and gray throughout it. Because the flooring is light, and the walls are light, I wanted to make sure there warm tones in the room to warm the space up. Now, one of our walls will be bricked (someday) and I think it will look lovely with browns in the flooring.
The Vintage Lace wood look tile does have that beautiful, vintage wood board look to it. Like chippy paint and faded rustic beauty – It’s truly gorgeous when you look at it all together. Even though it has that vintage look, it still feels really sophisticated to me too.
Laying and grouting the tile
The tile was easy to lay and grout. Once you were working with just one piece, the tile was easier to handle than a box of it was. It went down in sections. During the process we had to wait for more boxes since some were broken upon delivery and we needed more.
We decided on bright white grout for the wood look tile. I hemmed and hawed about this and put a poll in our Instagram. For a bit I thought about going gray or brown.
The Home Depot website shows images of the tile with grout colors in Bright White, DeLorean Gray and Charcoal. I decided on Bright white because I really wanted the tile to shine and didn’t want to focus as much on the grout. I felt that the white allowed me to do that versus the other colors.
Advice for ordering Vintage Lace wood look tile
After working with this tile, there’s some advice I want to give you if you decide to order it:
Over order.
There’s 7 pieces per case and one case covers 14 square feet. We had to cover about 800 square feet with the size of the whole basement.
The Vintage Lace wood look tile is really long and really heavy. We had some issues with a lot of the tile being broken when it arrived at our home from the store. Out of 60-something boxes we originally ordered, about 15 of the boxes were broken. We had already over ordered by about 20 percent, so this set us back.
When you take into account how many cuts you will need to make for corners and wall boards, you will need more than you think. I recommend over ordering by 30 percent just to be safe.
Ordering online
I also recommend ordering online {HERE} and having it shipped to your home. Why? I’m not kidding when I say, this tile is really, really heavy and it’s really long! It’s 51 lbs. and each piece is 3-feet long. It’s awkward to pick up a box of it and most times, you can’t pick it up on your own due to the length coupled with the heaviness. The less it has to move from place to place, the less of a chance it’s going to break.
Plus, when I ordered online, the tile arrived at my house wrapped in really amazing packaging encased in larger boxes. When I ordered from the store, (And yes, I did both for this project.) they had to open each of those larger boxes and then load the tile on a truck, bring it to me and unload it. Again, it is more about less moving equaling less breakage. If you can cut out some of that movement, that’s the way I would go.

How has it held up?
I have two children, two dogs and a husband. Full disclosure; they use the basement the most. They did in our old house too. Even though the basement is not technically done here, they moved in a big TV, video games and a cozy on the couch.
The tile has been fully installed since about mid-June, so we have had two months to “use” it. There are no scratches or cracks to be seen. That said, it has been under drop cloths and paper due to the constant in and out of work that we have with drywallers, painters, masons, HVAC people, electricians and more.
However, I mentioned that our tile at the old house was wood look tile too. Well, it was also from Home Depot. We used that tile for a good two years before selling our home and we never had any issues.
Would I buy the Vintage Lace wood look tile again?
Absolutely! I think it’s an invaluable part of our space. The look is so unique and beautiful. I can’t wait to see how it’s going to look when the whole space is completed.
Make sure to come back in about a month or so to check and see if it’s all FINALLY complete. We still have to brick the whole back wall, finish the wine cellar space and get our storage closet doors (Where we will hide all the toys and crafts!).
In the meantime, if you love our Vintage Lace wood look tile you can find it on the Home Depot website {HERE}.

That floor looks great and it is a different look than I have seen before.I have to keep Home Depot in mind if I put down any new flooring.
This tile is stunning! I wouldn’t mind having this. It just has a nice clean look. Your living room is beautiful.
This flooring looks great. It really looks like real wood pieces.
That is fully awesome! I love that it looks so much like wood, but you don’t have to worry about it getting wet.
These look perfect for any room in the house. I love how beautiful they are and that they’re more resilient than wood.
I love how this turned out, but I’m always so hesitant with white grout.
We’ve used it a lot and I like it so much better than dark grout.
That does look very beautiful. I am loving this look. I’d love to do my floors like this.
Gorgeous! Any tips on keeping the white grout clean?
Depending on the area it’s in, it comes clean in general mopping of the space. Dust and everything gets picked up then. If there’s a stain on it then I’ve found some vinegar and an old toothbrush work well. 🙂
I haven’t heard of this style of tile before but it is stunning! Perfect for a well-trafficked area since tile does stand up a little better than natural wood.
This is stunning and I’m OBSESSED! I’m putting this in my pocket for the day I get to buy
