Come see out newest space makeover around our family room TV and get TV stand decor ideas that you can use in your home too!
I have been wanting to makeover our family room TV area for months now. I literally started thinking about the project in August of last year, but knew it was going to be one of those slower projects for me.
Originally had planned to strip this piece and leave it as the raw, unfinished wood. But once I started sanding, I found out that the molding along the top was molded plastic and not real wood. Not only that but the sides of the piece are flimsy wood probably ply wood. Sanding it wasn’t going to work, or at least it wasn’t going to achieve my desired results.
However, painting furniture is actually something I dread. I always feel like it takes me 10 times longer than other bloggers and I get easily bored with painting projects too.
Why do a TV stand makeover?
That said, this space in our home was bothering me. Our wood floors are really, really dark. We tried getting them redone last year but with backups from the pandemic and the price of wood, it’s just not something we were able to make happen. But, our TV stand was black and the black on the dark wood was just too much for me in the space. It felt really heavy and styling the two pieces together became a challenge for me.
Picking a color
While I know the trend right now is towards black and moody colors, I didn’t want to leave the piece black. It was just too much of a good thing in one spot. And since the floors are so dark still, I didn’t want to go with a dark blue or olive green – both colors that I love and love to incorporate.
Instead, I chose to go white. I know that white is probably on its way “out” but I’m a firm believer is doing what’s right for your home despite whatever the trend is. I planned to bring in more neutrals through the TV stand decor ideas to help offset the contrast between the dark floors and the TV stand piece.
For the stand, I picked a creamy white from Farrow & Ball – a brand that I had never used before but also a brand that inspires me with their traditional, sophisticated and cozy colors. I used School House white to give our old TV stand a refresh and I’m really loving the results and the new TV stand decor ideas.
TV stand decor ideas
Around the TV space I decorated with a few things that can work as TV stand decor ideas in your home too. They’re pretty classic pieces and slant more traditional home, which is more my style than not.
1. A good basket for toys and pillows
As a parent, toy storage can be tough especially because I don’t like to see the toys when they’re not in use. I bought the basket in the photo a while ago and I love it for storage because it has a top. It was more of a splurge, but I really looked around to see if I could find something similar before buying it. When I couldn’t, I made the leap and I’m so glad I did. It looks sophisticated while hiding plenty of dinosaurs, Pokémons and race cars right next to the TV. Technically, it’s a hamper but I don’t think you would ever know it. You can find a version of it {HERE}. They’re changed the style a bit since I bought it. You can also find a more affordable option {HERE}.
I repeated this same texture and color on the other side of the stand with a basket for pillows. You can find this basket {HERE}. I’ve had this basket for a couple years and love how much I can fit into it.
2. Our globe
This is something that’s been in my family for years. It was my grandmothers and set in her library for my entire life. I remember loving it when I was a little kid and playing with it every time I would visit. When she died it was the one thing I requested from her house. Since it is a family item, you probably can’t find something exactly like it. But here are a few options if you’re trying to achieve the same look.
3. Plants
Always add plants no matter what you are decorating. Not only will they give it life but I’m a firm believer that plants make people happy. I used the same color planter twice to repeat the look and make the area feel cohesive. I also love that they add a touch of that moody blue to the space. You can find the small planter {HERE} and the larger one I have on the floor {HERE}.
4. The Frame
I’ll have a full review up about the Frame TV and the frame that goes around the TV but I really didn’t feel like this space would be complete without it. We actually purchased the Frame TV two days after moving into the house. We bought the floor model because I didn’t think this room had a great TV set up and I wanted something that would blend in. So far, I’m loving the look and feel like it caps off the space in a way that actually makes it feel like it was designed.
I chose not to add anything else to the wall because I didn’t want the space to feel cluttered. And after all, it still a TV, when I’m watching it I don’t really want other photos on the wall competing with the screen for my attention. I also feel like it’s more impactful this way too when it’s in art mode. You can find out golden Frame {HERE} and you can get $50 off your purchase with the code SugarMaple. Find the TV itself there too and use the code for money off the whole purchase. You can find the size I have {HERE}.
5. Additional items and greenery
I thought the pair of golden ducks would be a good addition to this space. Not only did they work well with the Frame for the TV but they also repeated the gold elsewhere in the space. They’re from a vintage shop that I love here in Grand Rapids called Blue Door. I also added in a stone rabbit since it is spring. I like to decorate spaces in threes often and it felt like he really completed the look hanging out on the floor by the pillows.
Also, in addition to the plants, I wanted more greenery so I added a bowl of moss balls. Items like these are great TV stand decor ideas because if you ever tire of them, you can move them to a different location. I feel like these work well year-round and they add in an element of Earthiness to the look of the space.
6. Soft items
Last but not least in the space I add some pillows to the basket on the left of the TV. Since this is our family room, blankets and pillows to cuddle with are always a necessity. Not only that but they soften the space that’s filled with hard edges. When it comes to TV stand decor ideas I think people often forget that soft items can be of value. However, they can really lend themselves to making the space feel cozy and just like home.
