Make this incredible homemade hot cocoa recipe mix in just minutes and always have some at your fingertips! Makes a perfect last minute, delicious gift!
I love a good cup of hot cocoa when the weather turns chilly. But sometimes, I don’t have time to stand over the stove and make it. Sometimes, I need a way to make a quick cup for me, the kids or a guest. That’s when I turn to my homemade hot cocoa recipe mix.
Why I love my homemade hot cocoa mix
There’s a lot of reasons to love this homemade hot cocoa recipe mix. I generally love it because it saves me time in making a cup of cocoa. But it’s also perfect for last minute gifting. You can add it all to a jar, wrap a ribbon around it and you have a delicious handmade gift for neighbors and friends.
Additionally, you can spoon this into packets to make individual servings of the hot cocoa mix. I use these bags {HERE} and add 3 Tablespoons to each bag plus 1 Tablespoon of milk chocolate chips for a one cup serving. I’m considering using these as Valentine’s Day gifts for my kids’ classes at school.
Lastly, you can make this in less than 10 minutes and have it at your disposal anytime. I love that it whips up fast and stores well.
Easily make homemade hot cocoa recipe mix
To make homemade hot cocoa recipe mix as a powder that you can keep and store, you’re going to use similar ingredients to my homemade hot chocolate. They are as follows:
- Cocoa Powder – This gives you that pure chocolate flavor. Use the best quality cocoa mix you can find to make it the best it can be.
- Granulated Sugar – Almost every recipe you find for a homemade hot cocoa recipe mix will say to use powdered sugar. However, I experimented a lot with this and powdered sugar is just not sweet enough to give you a ratio that will truly work well. I’ve found granulated sugar to be a much better option and it gives it all the perfect hot cocoa flavor.
- Milk Chocolate Chips – Sometimes chocolate chips are optional in homemade Hot Chocolate recipe mix, but I consider them a necessity. They will help round out your flavor and make the drink a little thicker.
- Optional: Salt – This will help to bring out the flavors but it will also help to balance out the sweetness in the mix.
- Toppings – If you’re making this as a gift in a mason jar, you can add marshmallows, chocolate chips and even candy canes to the top of the jar. If you’re making to fill packets, you can also add all of those, just make sure to distinguish on the outside of the packaging in case someone doesn’t love the flavor or peppermint and chocolate.
- A storage container – This could be anything from a mason jar to a plastic tub or the packets that I use for small gifting {HERE}.
When you make this, or when a friend makes this if it’s gifted, add 3 tablespoons of the mix to a cup of steamed or warmed milk.
Steps for making this homemade hot cocoa recipe mix
To make the homemade hot cocoa mix, all you have to do is sift all your ingredients together. If you need a sifter you can buy one {HERE} or you can combine everything in a bowl and gently whisk it with a wire whisk.
Once that’s done, package the homemade hot cocoa recipe mix and add in any kind of toppings you want with it. Some good options include mini marshmallows, chocolate chips or crushed candy canes. I make mine in bulk in mason jars, and I also can package it individually so that I can give these as little gifts for Holiday baskets or even Valentine’s.
Add a label to the container if you’re giving it as a gift. I’ve created these free printable tags and labels *** Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix recipe labels *** that you can print on card stock or my favorite sticker paper for individual bags. Again, you can find the bags I used {HERE}. When cutting these, cut the side strip first vertically so you can use them all without cutting into the others.
Thank you so much for stopping by today, friends! I hope to see you again soon. You can find the full, printable recipe below. If you’re looking for a recipe for how to make hot chocolate fresh at home for immediate drinking, you can find that {HERE}.
