It will probably be a few more days until I feel like I can give you a full tour of any room in the house for Christmas. But, I’m so excited to show you this little space in the barn and give you a little sneak peek into the farmhouse Christmas decor this year.
The feel of the barn space
If you follow the blog on a regular basis then you know that we have an extra space in the barn for our friends and family from out of town (which is all of them ) to stay. It’s a space we were able to build mostly from the ground up with a partial rebuild and renovation of our barn.
Since we renovated the barn (which was an old garage and a scary attic space), this space has a much different look than the house, which we bought renovated from the previous owners. The barn space is light and bright. I really wanted to open it up and have it feel airy.
It’s a contrast to the house, which has an almost black flooring that weighs it down. (Fingers crossed I can change that this year!)
Because it has a different light about it, it looks completely different from the house even though I am using a lot of the same elements in each space.
The farmhouse Christmas decor look
This space has actually been partially decorated with farmhouse Christmas decor since September because I had to do something for a client. But today I finished off this little nook and I love how festive and calm it feels.
This season, I’m using a lot of gold and brass – just like I did for Thanksgiving. I love the beautiful look of vintage pieces and I want to continue to add more vintage items with an old world feel to our home. Even though part of our house is 120 years old, everything is new. The old world charm was stripped out of it long ago and I’d love to be able to add some back.
Some of my favorite things that will be included in all my farmhouse Christmas décor this year are the brass horns that I found on Etsy and the brass candlesticks that I found again on Etsy and in local vintage shops in Grand Rapids. You’ll see them repeated as I show you other parts of the house this holiday season.
The Christmas tree
For the barn, a faux tree is safer for us since it’s a space we aren’t in all the time. I bought our Christmas tree last year from Balsam Hill. It’s the Alpine Balsam Fir Tree. I wanted something that looked a little like a Charlie Brown Tree. I also bought one of their trees for our living room because the quality was amazing.
For the ornaments, I used wood ornaments that I bought from Kirland’s last year. I love the rustic look and that they look handmade. I also bought a wood garland from a local shop here in Grand Rapids that I’ve used again too.
This year, I added garland that you can find {HERE}. I actually bought this for our table last year but as I’ve tried to go more natural with the fall, Thanksgiving and Christmas farmhouse décor for the table, this didn’t have a place. Instead, I decided to reuse it on the tree, and I love the way it adds an extra bit of sparkle.
A cozy spot
As a cozy centerpiece, I added a chair that you can find {HERE} and {HERE}. We were given this chair last year from the parent company and I’ve loved having it in the barn. It’s really perfect for the whole barndominium look and fits in with the farmhouse Christmas décor. Not only that, it’s comfortable too! The pillow in this photo is one of my favorites too! You can find it {HERE}.
We were also given the side table from the same company and I love it’s function. The antique grey color works well with the shiplap in our space and it is really the perfect height too. You can find that {HERE}.
Making the farmhouse Christmas decor feel even more cozy are a few vintage books. I’m not one to buy vintage books. In fact, most of the time I think a book you won’t ever read is a big waste of money. BUT, these two books I picked specifically because one is about writing and poetry, which I love, and the other is Romeo and Juliet. How could I pass that up?
The wall décor
So, we don’t have any shiplap in the house and I’m not completely sure I want to add it in there. But, it was really perfect for the barn. I’ve also discovered that it really lets me play with the wall décor without leaving visible holes. I LOVE that.
That said, I always feel the need to dress it up. So, joining those lovely brass horns are two branches of a juniper with a bit of burlap and lacey ribbon. I love how the juniper brings the Christmas green to the wall and the ribbon helps to hold the branches together and gives it more of a decorative feel.
Lastly, the “ladder” is a purchase from last year and it’s a piece Ioved having around as additional décor. Sometimes it just adds that extra, little vibe to a space. And it holds my ice skates perfectly. Don’t you think?
I call it a “ladder” because it’s not something you should ever climb. In fact, it doesn’t even really look like a ladder up close. But, I do love it. If you do too, you can find it {HERE}.
So that’s it! What do you think of our sneak peek farmhouse Christmas decor, friends? I hope you find it inspiring this Christmas season.
Thank you so much for visiting and I hope you will come back again to see what else we are up to at Sugar Maple Farmhouse.
I love all of these ideas, especially the vintage books and Christmas Tree decor! When my kids were younger they always wanted to put up our old, tacky Christmas decorations. Now that most of them are moved out of the house, I can decorate minimally!! I’m not used to the simplicity of this decor, but I think it will make decorating a less overwhelming task. My favorite part of decorating during the holiday season is getting my upholstery cleaned, fluffing up the holiday pillows on the couch, and taking a nap after all of the decorating is complete!!
Such pretty decor. It makes me want to start decorating my house like this.
