I have been collecting some ideas for Halloween projects for the last few years and I am so excited to be working on some of them this season! Last year, I was writing my recipe book and had absolutely no time to make both fall decor and Halloween decor. Being a mom, fall sports, the book, running the farm, closing up the garden – I was tapped out. But this year, friends I am so EXCITED to be working on some of the ideas I’ve had rattling around in my brain for Halloween season like this Snake Wreath.
Every year I have a theme or direction I am going to go and this year it is all things creepy and crawly. In 2023, I created more of a more Cottagecore Halloween, the previous year I dove into the origins of Halloween and made some witchy things to celebrate Samhain and one year I even did a Harry Potter themed Halloween. This year it is snakes, spiders and skulls.
Double or nothing
Before we begin, I will tell you that I have to make two Snake Grapevine Wreaths. I don’t have a lot of spaces with one door unless it is an interior bedroom door. The front doors are double, the interior library doors are double (which is where I have these hanging) and the soon-to-be laundry room interior doors are double. I would not put these in a place that is exposed to all the elements or isn’t covered. That took out my backdoor, which is my only single exterior door. Keep that in mind as I talk about the supples needed for this project. You might need less spray paint or fewer snakes if you are making only one wreath.
Supplies needed for making the Snake Grapevine Wreath
For the supplies, I’ve included everything you need on this Amazon list {HERE}. However, I bought my wreaths from Michael’s last Christmas season. They are large 24-inch wreaths. The ones on the list are 18 inches. You can use those or look for larger ones at the craft store. Below is a full list of the supplies I used if you want to buy your own, or maybe you have some of these things already too.
- Face mask if desired
- Gloves for your hands
- Grapevine wreaths
- Plastic snakes in various sizes (I ordered 2 of most of the snakes for my double wreaths.)
- Black spray paint in matte (About 2 cans)
- Black spray paint in satin (About 2 cans)
- Floral wire
- Floral wire cutters
- Hanging device
Instructions for making the DIY Snake Wreaths
Step 1
Find a grapevine wreath you want to use, cover the work surface with paper or boxes and spray paint it with black spray paint. Make sure you are doing this outside or in a well ventilated garage. Spray the back side first and then the front. Make sure to get in all the nooks of the branches. I used a matte spray paint for the wreath color on the Snake Wreath.
I gave my wreath a few hours to dry before flipping it over and spraying the front. Then I went and sprayed the front several times over the course of 24 hours to make sure I covered it completely. Let it dry. Drying time will depend on the weather. It was humid here when I started the project so they took longer to dry.
Step 2
Make sure the work surface is still covered and well ventilated. Spray the snakes with a satin black spray paint. Again, start by spraying the back side first and then flip them. I let them dry a few hours and then flipped them. I did spray mine twice to make sure that I got all the sides of them.
Step 3
Once everything is dry, lay out the snakes to see how you want them for the snake grapevine wreath. Using floral wire, attach the largest ones first. Then move through attaching the other snakes by size if you have various sizes. Feel free to weave them in and out of one another and wrap them around the wreath. I do not suggest trying to weave them through the leaf because I found a lot of the snakes to be delicate and the paint would chip or the snake itself would even break.

Step 4
Touch up any paint. Take the Snake Wreaths back to the workspace and touch up any of the spaces with short bursts of spray paint. Also, use the spray paint to cover the floral wire. I had some snakes that needed spots re-sprayed and then I didn’t want to see the floral wire. I alternated spraying that with the two paints based on where it was. If it was over a snake, I used the satin spray. If it was over the grapevine, I used the matte spray. Once this is done, let the wreath dry completely before hanging.

Tips for making the DIY Snake Grapevine Wreath
- I personally think a grapevine wreath that looks a little bit wild for this craft is better and it makes it more natural looking. If you are buying on new, I would go with that. Of course, you can go with whatever type you prefer.
- When it comes to the snakes, the ones that coil do not work very well. They didn’t keep the spray paint on as well as the others and I even had one break as I was trying to wrap it around a wreath – twice. It was really strange. So just a word of caution if you go with longer snakes that have the ability to be coiled. (Yes, I did still include them on the Amazon lost just in case you want to go for it anyways.)
- When it comes to placement, I do not recommend placing these on a door that is impacted by rain or a lot of sun. At the very least, hang them on a door with an overhang area if they are going to be outside. I have a large front porch with an overhang and double doors but I still wasn’t sure I wanted to put these outside after spending this time on them.
- Storing the wreath. When it comes time to store these, I probably will buy a wreath storage form like this {HERE}. If you take care of these pieces you will be able to use them year after year.
