Our formal living room is small, but I consider it “my space”. Kevin says the whole house is my space and in reality, he’s probably right. But even after three years of living here in the farmhouse, there are few spaces that feel like they belong to me.
Maybe it’s because we haven’t designed that many of the spaces I use most frequently. Sure, we torn down half the barn, added a kitchen and living space; rearranged the top floor to give us a master suit and this year remodeled the basement. (Sounds like a lot for three years when I list it out.)
Why it’s my space
But still…of the spaces I actually use on a regular basis, we haven’t done much. So when I say the living room feels like my space, I guess it’s really because it’s a space that I almost solely use. It’s my reading room and one hopefully more of a library space.
However since it’s more of a formal space, I tend to make it our formal Christmas tree space too. Both my grandmothers had two Christmas trees growing up – one more formal and the other more lighthearted. We never had two until we moved here and had two beautiful windows that each deserved a tree.
Simple Christmas Living Room Decor
The Christmas tree in the family room is our memory tree. It’s filled with ornaments that mark my family’s lives together. It’s always the same.
The tree in the living room is always more formal, and it changes from year to year. This year, I wanted to keep it simple. I decorated late and just felt like I was in a bit of a funk this whole season. Always keeping myself busy and pushing to do projects or make another new recipe …I got caught up in the busy of everything except for decorating. Simple Christmas living room decor was really a necessity.
But still, simple felt right this year. My heart needed simple Christmas living room decor, and maybe a bit vintage with a touch of whimsy in my space too.

Christmas tree inspiration
In past years, the tree has been stuffed with ribbons and ornaments and faux flowers. Instead, I wanted out simple Christmas living room decor to feel more natural. i decided to decorate the tree with dried oranges this year. In the past I’ve used them on our staircase, and around the top of my stove, but I loved the idea of incorporating them into the tree. Instead of doing a full garland I decided to sporadically hang them on the tree. I glue the oranges to paper clips and was able to add them wherever I wanted. You can find out how to dry oranges {HERE}.

I also added candles to the tree. While mine are battery operated for safety’s sake, the candles ass a bit of the vintage vibe to the tree. In 1910, much closer to when my home and my living room were originally built, people decorated their Christmas trees with real candles that were attached with clips or wire. You can find the candles I used {HERE}.

Velvet is huge this season and I wanted to add it to the tree. Instead of using it as a garland in some way, I add it as bows for a touch of the trend. In the 1920’s, people used ribbon to decorate their Christmas trees – whether it was tied in bows or strung around it. You can find the ribbon I used {HERE}. I ordered two colors – red and wine. I believe these are the wine color.
The garland on the tree is a simple, wood bead garland. I actually love this garland and it’s simplicity. Since this tree doesn’t have any ornaments per say, I think the garland adds a bit of the traditional theme back in. I’ve also been honestly looking for garland like this for awhile and I think that we will be able to use this for years to come. You can find the one I bought {HERE}. Just FYI, you will need several to cover a whole tree.
Finishing off the space this year I included paper bag stars that I made. I really didn’t want to go overboard spending on new decor and having a tree/room that changes each year can leave you feeling the money pinch. You can find out how to make them {HERE}.

What do you think?
With the stars, the twinkling lights and the pared back ornaments, I think this simple Christmas living room decor set up still packs a magical punch. What do you think?

Looks so homey! Would love to use this as an inspiration for our living room as well.
