To me, Mother’s Day has always been a holiday that’s about people and plants. That means, spending time with the people you love and giving plants as a gift. Mother’s Day also happens to be the day where we in the Northern Midwest can finally start putting plants in the ground, so for me it’s always really been a bit of a dual-purpose holiday – celebration of creating and growing life.
How our Mother’s Day Tradition started
Six years ago on Mother’s Day, I started my first vegetable garden with a very pregnant belly and a 2-year-old daughter by my side. The meaning of Mother’s Day really solidified itself to me that day. It was still all about people and plants – but these were my little people and my little plants. Both tiny things that I had the pleasure of nourishing and bring to life through a mix of magic and science.
Now that our garden has grown from two, small, raised beds in our suburban backyard to a ¼, we spend Mother’s Day the same way. Only now, both kids are old enough to help me plant and through it they learn, they grow and I get the pleasure of watching it all.
This year, Mother’s Day falls a few days earlier than normal. My plan is to hold off on planting our vegetables for another week, but in keeping with our Mother’s Day traditions, the kids and I will still be digging in the dirt. In partnership with Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart, we are potting up some of the loveliest flowers in stone planters from their collection.
The Better Homes & Gardens flowers
I really love using a variety of flowers in our garden each year to create interest with heigh, texture and color. I feel like the mixture of some bold, beautiful blooms with small, wispy flowers really creates a romantic effect – like something you might find in a field or the European countryside. Or, in a field of wildflowers. There’s several I picked from the Better Homes & Gardens collection at Walmart that give me just that feel. They include:
- Megacopa Bacopa
- Magadi Lobelia
- Hawaiian Luau Confetti Garden (This one is such a pretty mix.)
- Sutera Cordata
- Phlox
- Foxglove
- Geraniums
Overall, you’ll find a really great selection of annuals and perennials that will make beautiful additions to your garden this summer.

When it comes to planters this season, I’m working to avoid anything plastic. I love that the Better Homes & Garden Collection at Walmart really has so many ceramic and stone options available this season! The gorgeous deep blues and creamy whites are my favorites.
