Create a charming DIY moss bunny for your spring decor. Perfect for your table or Easter celebrations. All the steps and the supplies are below and make sure to watch the YouTube video to see exactly how I made it.
This adorable DIY Moss Bunny was a fun and easy craft project for spring. It goes so well with our spring decor and I love how it adds a little lasting greenery to our early spring home when fresh greenery is hard to come by. This craft took me less than two hours and now I have a unique and charming piece of decor that can be used each spring.
Moss bunny topiaries are all over the place right now, as are moss bunny statues and other little sculptures. Moss is just having a moment. I think people appreciate it so much when they are craving the bright florals of spring but it still looks a little drab outside. But, it also works any time of the year in a variety of different ways.
Crafting and the planet
When I started this project I really wanted to make sure it felt like me. That is, that I used real dried moss and that I made sure to do it in the most eco friendly possible. Sometimes I feel like the craft industry just does not care about being eco friendly and it is something I wrestle with constantly when wanting to make cure decor items. The base for all these moss bunny rabbits is usually styrofoam, which is one of the worst things you can have for the planet. I try not to buy it, ever. However, I started looking and I did find these “styrofoam” balls that are made out of recycled plastic {HERE}. Since this is a piece I will be keeping for years and not something I will be tossing, I decided the recycled plastic styrofoam would be the best thing to use. And, if I do want to get rid of my moss bunny in the future (why would I want that?) I could recycle him again too.
Dried moss
I have seen people do projects like this using fake moss, but I opted for dried moss sheets and loose dried moss. It is not anymore expensive than a fake moss and I love the texture and the look it gives tot he DIY moss bunny rabbit. Even from farther away it makes it seem like something that could actually be a plant versus more of a sculpture piece.

Supplies for the DIY Moss Bunny craft
Here is a list of the supplies for the DIY Moss Bunny. You can find the whole list {HERE} on Amazon. I did not include they styrofoam balls because I really do think it is important you see these in person. However, you can buy them online if you prefer.Just pay attention to sizes.
- Two recycled plastic styrofoam balls – one smaller for the head and one larger for the body. This is the brand I used {HERE}. A 6-inch ball and a 12-inch ball. They can be found in person at local craft stores.
- Dreid moss sheets – You will need 3-4 of these packages to make a bunny the size of mine. You can generally find them less expensive at the craft stores.
- Glue gun and a lot of glue
- Bamboo sticks (Amount really depends on the size of your moss bunny)
- Cardboard for the ears
- Additional lose dried moss to fill in gaps
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Paper towels
- Ribbon for around the bow
- A pot or planter for holding the moss bunny

Steps for making the DIY Miss Bunny
- Take the white backing off the moss sheets and then cut a small square from the sheet. Add hot glue to the back of the sheet and then place this on one of the styrofoam balls. (It does not matter which one you start with.) Press it into place and hold it down to petit.Repeat this process as necessary to cover the ball. In some cases, you might be cutting a triangle to fill gaps versus a square.
- Go back over the ball with the glue gun and make sure the edges are all secured. This is especially helpful to do with the seams.
- Follow the same steps on the second ball.
- Then using the bamboo skewers, place them in the head of the bunny on the side you want to use as the bottom. Make sure they are secure. I used three bamboo skewers on my bunny.
- Push the other side those skewers into the body of the bunny in the space you want to join the pieces. Be careful not to break them off and work too push in one at a time a little if needs be.
- Trace and then cut out the ears from a spare piece of cardboard. The cut out a square of moss that will be used to wrap around the ears. make it slightly larger than the ears themselves to allow for wrapping.
- Put glue on the front side of the cardboard and press it down to the back of the moss. Press and hold it in place.
- Then add one bamboo skewer to each of the ears. Wrap those with the moss and secure it to the back with the glue gun. If you have spots the moss did not reach, cut out individual pieces to fill in the gaps like I did in the video.
- Push the point ends of the bamboo skewers into the head piece to secure them to the bunny.
- Fill in any gaps or spots that don’t overlap nicely with the loose moss and your glue gun.
FIY on the mess
Just so you know, this is a messy project. Whoever you are working will be full of pieces of moss afterwards and whatever you are wearing will be covered as well. I made this wearing a cable knit sweater and I have to say, it was the wrong choice.
