This DIY Football Field Table Runner is a fun addition to any football fan”s house for game day or the Super Bowl party each year. Save this so you can make it to get everyone excited to root for their favorite team!
We are having friends over for the Super Bowl this year and I have been knee deep in planning some cute (Should football decor be cute? Hmmmm…) football decor ideas to make it look more festive. This DIY Football Field Table Runner is really the idea that started it all for me.
Duel Purpose Decor
Each time we have people over, or do any kind of craft I try to find ways to keep my tables safe. My basement tables are vintage (not the greatest idea with kids) and my main table in the kitchen I just love. And it stains easily since we never fully sealed it after taking a coat of old varnish off. I’m always looking for ways to protect it until we can decide what to do with it this summer. I love this Football Field Table Runner because it acts as a way to protect my table while serving as cute decor for the big game too. It’s my favorite kind of decor – functional!
It’s a keeper
I really adore how this DIY Football Field Table Runner project turned out, and I believe it will be a great add to our Super Bowl party decor. Not only is it functional, but this is something we can roll up, put away and pull out every football season or for every Super Bowl party we have, well, forever. I never love when there’s a DIY project that’s a make and throw away kind-of-a-thing. Halloween often feels like a lot of it’s decor, especially homemade outdoor decor falls into that category. I’m so please this is one project that’s a keeper. Even if it gets dirty, you can rinse it off.
Football Field Table Runner supplies:
- A tape measure to measure the lines
- Blue tape to help mark out the lines
- A ruler to help position the numbers and letters
- Artificial grass mat at the size of your table (or smaller if you truly just want it to be a runner). You can find this at some hardware stores and cut them to size. I ordered mine {HERE} in the exact size of my table so I didn’t have to cut it. They have over 900 size options so there’s a good chance you will find your size.
- Strong scissors – If you do need to cut your mat, you will need a good pair of sheers to cut through it.
- Green 2 inch duct tape. You can find mine {HERE}.
- 3/4 inch white duct tape. You can find mine {HERE}.
If you don’t have a Cricut…
Steps for making the football field table runner
- Cut the faux grass mat to size if you’re cutting it.
- Find the middle with the tape measure and mark it with blue tape so you know where to put the 50 yard line
- Next use the tape measure and mark out the additional yard lines. Mine are 8 inches apart. This will be based on your runner mat size. Make sure to leave room for the end zones. (Or you could omit those.)
- Use the blue tape to mark out each of the individual yard lines.
- Then, use the tape measure and the white duct tape to create the yard lines. Once you have it lined up, press the white duct tape down. It should stick really well.
- Next, wrap the edges with the green tape. This helps to keep the edges from fraying and getting little black specs of plastic everywhere. Also note, the green tape doesn’t stick as well to the “grass” side as I hoped. Next year I might add a little super glue to that side to help. Certain areas like to pop up every now and then.
- Add an extra piece of green tape to the back side corners to help keep the green tape in place better. See photo below.
- Create the letters and numbers in whatever way you are planning above. If using a Cricut, let the machine cut everything and then lay the numbers on either side of the yard lines and the TOUCHDOWN letters in the end zones. Use the ruler to help you place everything. If you’re using the adhesive stickers, cut them out and then lay them out. Again, use the ruler for the measurements. If stenciling, use the ruler to measure positioning and then let dry completely.
Here’s a few other things you might want too!
