Come and see how I made these lovely, beautiful DIY Floral Vintage Bird Ornaments. They are full of old world charm and rich colors that will make anyone who is a lover of flowers, patterns and birds will adore. Save this to Pinterest now so you can always find it!
Our Christmas tree in the family room tends to stay the same each year – with a tree full of our memory ornaments – but the Christmas tree in may small library space changes from year to year. It is always similar in feel but it is a tree that is a little more formal. I love when it has an old world with deeper colors and making use of natural decor elements.
This year I knew I wanted to use dried hydrangeas on the tree from our bushes along the barn. We planted the bushes in 2020 and they are now finally large enough that I cut blooms without worry and have an abundance of dried flowers at the end of the season. From there I knew I really wanted the tree to have a rich color scheme the reflected nature. These DIY Floral Vintage Bird Ornaments fit in perfectly with that theme and in fact, I believe they pulled all the colors on my tree together.

Reasons why I love these
As a lover of all things vintage, I adore how these turned out for several reasons. The first reason is that they look like they could be vintage ornaments. The colors and the patterns remind me of old wallpaper and using the napkins gives the texture of wallpaper too.
Additionally, as a gardener and nature lover, I’m always missing the birds and blooms at Christmas time and I love that this pattern brings the feel of the outdoors in while also being elegant.
Lastly, they still give me a very cottage/country house kind of feel that really works for my home, especially in this room which was built in 1900.

The simplest craft
Simply put, my DIY floral vintage bird ornaments are made from 4 inch clear ornaments, modge podge and napkins. I had seen a few people create napkin crafts throughout the year and decided I wanted to try using the same technique on these ornaments. This is honestly one of the simplest crafts I have ever made and easy enough for a beginner to do.
Supplies for making the Vintage Bird Ornaments
You can find my whole Amazon supply list {HERE} or just use what you have at home or from the local craft store too.
- Ornaments – You can actually use whatever you want for these whether you want to upcycle some old ones you no longer use or use glass or plastic clear ornaments. Mine are clear, plastic, 4-inch (100mm) ornaments.
- Modge podge – You can also use clear Elmer’s Glue if you prefer.
- Inexpensive paint brush – This will be completely ruined so I recommend using something cheaper.
- Napkin of your choice – You can find the one I used {HERE}. I have included more options on my full Amazon supply list {HERE}. The only thing I recommend is using a napkin with a colored background. I tried this with napkins with a white background and the modge dodge made some of those white spaces see through, which is really obvious when you have to layer them on top of one another.
- Gold spray paint of your choice – This is for the hangers. They will usually be silver.

Steps for making the DIY Floral Vintage Bird Ornaments
Step 1
Remove the ornament hangers and spray paint them with your choice if spray paint outside in a well ventilated area. Let them dry.
Step 2
Cut out the different elements on the ornaments. Making these will kind of be like making a collage and seeing which pieces fit together where. The smaller the pieces, the less wrinkles you will get but the more overlap you might have. I cut out a main bird and flower or two groupings and then some other flowers individually for gap filling.
Step 3
Brush a layer of modge podge onto one side of the ornament and then place your larger elements. Brush another layer of modge podge over them to seal them in place. The napkin will wrinkle some because you are putting a flat piece of paper on a round surface. However, if you coat them with modge podge really well, the wrinkles will soften and fold over. It ends up creating a beautiful effect that makes me think of wallpaper. I tried not to have wrinkles on the birds, but sometimes it happened. You cannot tell when they are hanging.
Step 4
Repeat the process of applying the modge podge, a piece of napkin and then layering the modge podge over that until the entire ornament is filled. Think about how each piece will lay together and do not be afraid to mix it up some from the original look of the napkin.
Step 5
Let them fully dry. I did this by placing them on skewers in random house plants. Unlike some other midge podge crafts, these will feel dry to the touch and do not remain tacky. Then add the hangers back to the DIY Floral Vintage Bird Ornaments and then enjoy!
