These DIY birds nests for decoration are a beautiful way to add some natural touches to your home throughout the year, but especially in spring! Save this post to Pinterest so you can make them!
We have a grapevine in our yard that just grows. It’s a riverbank grapevine that appears to grow throughout our property so most of the time, I ignore it. Each season I promise myself I’ll look into taking better care of them and each season passes…Opps! Maybe next year?
Well friends. this might be the year!
This year I decided to do a late winter prune of the grapevine and create a few projects from it. If you’ve followed me for awhile then you know I love using natural elements to decorate. In the seasons where fresh flowers are scarce, dried flowers are my go-to. And since my grapevine has needed desperate pruning anyways, I decided to incorporate it too and make a few DIY Bird Nests for decoration.
How to use them in decor
I love how these DIY Bird Nests look and loved incorporating them into my spring decor as well as an Easter table (coming soon!). Everything about them speaks to me and they’re made of simply my grapevine, dried flowers and some twine so they’re completely biodegradable should I decided not to keep them. But since they’re gorgeous, I might as well keep them, right?
The easiest way to use the DIY Bird Nests for decoration is to make them table decor or add them to a candle pillar to give them some height. I put one on our coffee table, one at the entry and used some in the Easter tablescape.
For the eggs, I used these Gold Leaf Easter Eggs {HERE} that I made two years ago, some faux blue eggs and some of our real chicken eggs on the tablescape.
Supplies for making DIY Bird Nests for decoration
- Something to form the base of the nest – This could be grape vine or pliable tree or bush branches from anything you need to trim this spring (even hydrangeas would work). If you don’t have a yard, or don’t have any trees and bushes in need of trimming, you can also purchase grapevine garland {HERE}.
- NOTE: Please do NOT go cutting any vines you are not familiar with. I don’t want anyone getting poison ivy or poison oak or poison anything. Thank you!
- Moss – I used two kinds. Green moss like this one {HERE} and dried Spanish moss {HERE}.
- Twine – Natural Jute Twine like this {HERE}.
- Dried Flowers – Mine are from Michael’s but if you can’t make it there or your store doesn’t actually have dried flowers, here are some that are similar to mine. Purple flowers {HERE}, white themed dried flowers {HERE}, dried baby’s breath {HERE}, pink dried Amaranth {HERE} and dried chamomile {HERE}.
- Flower cutters – If you need some, I have these ones {HERE}.
Steps for making DIY Bird Nests for decoration
- Cut branches from bushes, trees or cut down vines.
- Wrap the first branch in a circle about 5-6 inches wide. Secure with twine.
- Wrap a second branch and weave it around the first. Secure with twine if needed.
- Repeat 4 more times or so, but instead of using more twine, weave the branches in and out of one another. Use the tension within the branches themselves to hold the nest together.
- Interweave 2-3 branches across the bottom of the next. Tuck any ends into the body of the nest. Use one more piece of twine to secure if necessary.
- Layer in moss. Start with the Spanish moss on the base of the nest and push it in between the branches. Also add some to the rim of the nest.
- Add in some green moss on the rim of the nest by pushing it between the branches too.
- Tuck dried flowers into the branches of the rim of the nest and then display with some faux eggs!
It’s pretty simple, right?
