It was 80 degrees here last week and I think summer-like weather has been really impacting my love of the “fall” season this year. In the upper Midwest, we expect the crisp air to show up in September, the leaves to be slowly floating to the ground in early October and the pumpkins in the fall front porch decor to be out for several moons – at least.
Here on the farm, only one of those things came true this year. The pumpkins have been out with my fall front porch decor in all their glory since late September. The crisp weather just showed up this week and the leaves…they are just starting to flutter on down. Even the old Sugar Maple out front has still held onto her leaves until this last week. She’s usually completely bare by now.
I guess that’s at least part of the reason why it’s taken me so long to get the fall front porch decor up on the blog this year. Usually it’s my favorite space to decorate during the cozier season, but this year – like the weather – I just couldn’t seem to get to a happy place with it. Although this week, when the nights reached the mid-40’s, I looked around the front porch and it felt just right.
Making what you have work
This season, I decorated the spring front porch with blue rugs. I loved how happy they were and they went well with the purple and white flowers I used out there. But as fall approached, I thought about the blue tone and the pumpkins together and thought it might look like an ode to the Chicago Bears. (You might have to be from Chicago to get it.)
And yet, I had them. I didn’t want to replace them with something new just yet. Instead, I went with it. I just sprinkled in a few orange pumpkins here and there and kept the bulk of them neutral. I think it works really well together with the fall front porch decor and the whole color scheme makes me happy.
Sometimes when you start working with what you have, you end up realizing it really just works.
In fact, everything except the flowers and the pumpkins, has been a part of the porch since spring. From my planters to the welcome rug to my vintage table by the swing, it’s all been part of our little space since the weather warmed and the spring birds started singing. Oh! Follow your instincts
Earlier this year I thought I’d love burgundies out in this space like I did in the fall front porch decor last year. But those blue rugs…
Instead, I saw purple/pink mums this season and bought them without even thinking about the way they would work with the rugs. I had never seen this color before and felt like it was special. I actually love how the tones go together and work with the more subtle pumpkin shades too.
They may not be the usual color you think of for fall, but sometimes you have to trust your instincts and lean into something a little different.
A bit of DIY
The front door wreaths are a DIY this season. I couldn’t use the ones I normally use because they’re somewhere in the piles of stuff still stored in the basement. Because it’s STILL not finished.
I purchased grape vine wreaths and then added on faux florals that would bring out the tones in the flowers and corn stalks. The great thing about using grape vine is that you sometimes don’t even need floral wire.
I usually like to use dried flowers in wreaths but since these are going outside, faux works better. Plus, since the inside of the house went spooky this season with the Witchy fireplace and Harry Potter corner, I didn’t have a ton of dried flowers floating around.
