When Ruggable Rugs first hit the scene a few years ago, I didn’t think much of them. I saw Ruggable reviews and didn’t give them a second thought. Most of the reviews seemed negative in the early days and we enjoyed our hardwood floors in the old house.
Now let’s fast forward a few years. I live on a farm with animals. My two kids are like walking, talking tornado disasters that spill and smudge on everything. Our old dog developed an incontinence problem before passing away last year. Our new puppies have taken awhile to potty train. And let’s not forget about the chickens. Every once in awhile someone will wear their shoes in the living room (This is a big no no for me.) after they’ve been running around outside dealing with chickens and the yard.
The big, beautiful, plush rug we bought when we moved in here (which you can see here) was trashed and I could no longer deal with the way it smelled or felt under my feet. We threw it out and thought we would live without a rug for a while. We had done it before and could do it again.
But then, we had never done it in this house, with its dark as night hardwood floors that are impossible to keep clean.
A few weeks after getting rid of our beautiful rug, I was going crazy with the Swiffer and all the dirt that’s 100 percent visible on dark hardwood. Any time it rained the dogs would come in and track in dirt – even after wiping their feet. Every speck of dust, of lint and spill that isn’t perfectly cleaned can be seen on these floors.
I could no longer deal with that either.
I splurged and bought a Ruggable rug. They didn’t pay me nor did they give it to me for any kind of in-kind partnership. I paid full price and because of that, I felt I could truly bring you an honest Ruggable review. Here are my thoughts:
What is a Ruggable rug?
If you haven’t heard of Ruggable before then you might be wondering what the fuss is all about. Ruggable’s kind of claim-to-fame is that they are rugs you can wash. They are thin rugs made of polyester with a polyurethane water-resistant barrier that come with a removable pad.
The pad is essentially rubber. It’s made of recycled polyester and thermoplastic rubber, which is a latex-free synthetic material that is used in making yoga mats.
The rug on top of the pad can be removed and added to the washing machine just like a blanket – including the 8×10.
They are expensive
Honestly, I was a bit blown away by their price tag. I paid around $400 for out 8×10 rug. Prior to this, all the rugs I had purchased were from Target and always somewhere just below $100. Because I have animals and because I have children, expensive rugs are not something I would have EVER considered prior to this.
I hemmed and hawed for a few weeks due to my sticker shock. I eventually clicked the button to buy because I couldn’t live with the black floors any longer. However, I do feel they are overpriced for what you get. However, if this saves me from needing to buy new rugs every year, then perhaps I’m saving money in the long term?
They are thin
For me, this is a positive and a negative with this Ruggable review. I kind of love that they are thin because they feel more like one of the vintage rugs you might find at a thrift shop. And obviously, they need to be thin to be able to wash them.
Also – obviously – due to this they aren’t as comfortable as a rug that has a heavier pile or padding. Yes, there is a rug pad that’s sold with the rugs, but that’s really more of a rubber mat. It’s 1/8 of an inch thick and there to keep the rug in place, not to make it comfortable.
I do know that Ruggable has now come out with a thicker, high pile rug in two designs. That one might be comfier to sit on.
The important thing to note here is that the top piece, the rug with the design that you will see every day, feels like a thin blanket.
They feel good
While they aren’t specifically rugs you will get cozy on, our Ruggable rug does feel good below my bare feet. It’s soft so it does make it better if you’re sitting on the ground. Both our dogs love laying on it too.
The look of our Ruggable rug
Ruggable has a lot of styles and patterns for their rugs and you can find a good mix of modern, geometric, traditional and other rug styles. That’s a big plus for anyone reading this Ruggable review. Our family room rug is the Hendesi Heriz Abalone Rug and is one of the more traditional rugs. You can find it {HERE}.
I decided to go with this one because my house is more traditional. Sure there are elements of modern things in it, but overall, our farmhouse is a pretty traditional home.
Additionally, the colors in the Hendesi rug worked well with the colors in my family room. My couches are blue/grey and my walls are a Sherwin Williams grey. Our old rug was solid grey and I didn’t want that again. I’m honestly a bit over grey and there is way too much of it happening in my family room. I appreciate that this rug brings in blue, cream and a light beige.
I also considered the Delphina Delft Blue Rug and Sima Royal Blue rug to begin bring in other warm colors and elements.
The size options
In my opinion, Ruggable does not yet have enough size options. I ordered an 8×10 because it was the largest. Our old rug was much larger and we could have both of our couches sitting on it, which helped to keep them in place as well as the rug. I would have preferred a 10×12 or even a 12×14. That said, I’m not sure I would have been able to afford those rugs. Also, there might be a certain size where you can no longer put it in the washing machine, which takes away from the whole purpose.
They did just recently introduce round rugs so I know they are listening to customers when it comes to sizing.
A rug you can wash
Since we’ve only had our rug for a few weeks, I haven’t washed it yet. Oddly, the puppies have been very good about not going potty on it.
We have had a friend’s daughter spill water on it and they dried up fairly quickly. I’ll give you an update on this when we do wash it for the first time.
The edging on the rugs
I’m pointing this out because it’s something I noted and I don’t want to let this review go by without mentioning it. The trim on the rug already seems to be softening in the highest traffic area. And by that I mean it’s getting a bit fuzzy. I’m not sure what that means for the future of this rug if that trim does start to fray.
I’d love for the trim on it to be stronger. These rugs are supposed to be for high traffic homes or areas of your home and I don’t see how they can withstand that it the trim threading doesn’t hold up.
The ability to change the design
Something that’s really unique to Ruggable and a feature that I personally love is that you can buy the rug covers independent of the pads. That means, now that I have one pad, I can swap out rug covers throughout the year and change them for the seasons. You don’t have to buy a new pad each time you buy a new cover.
Then, because the covers are so thin, they fold up and easily fit in the linen closet with towels, blankets and sheets for storage.
Keep in mind the price though $170 for a new rug cover via Ruggable is again a bit of a sticker shock.
Overall Ruggable review …
Would I buy another Ruggable rug? Yes. I’m considering one for my office with the brick floor to make it more cozy looking.
Would I recommend Ruggable to you? Yes, if you can afford it and have animals, children or spouses that live for making messes.
Do I think it was worth it?
Right now yes. I’m very happy with the look and feel of the Ruggable rug. I do wish some things were different and I want to see how it goes after the first wash and I want to see how the edge threading holds up. BUT, I would buy the Hendesi rug again.
UPDATE
We washed the rug and I’m so pleased with how it washed! There was no additional fraying around the endges, it wasn’t wrinkled and we were able to relay it on the pad easily. Kevin has said ruggable rugs are the only ones we should buy going forward. I agree. Looking to get one for both kids’ rooms, my office and our basement remodel {CLICK HERE FOR THAT!} when it’s finished!
Thank you so much for visiting today friends! I hope that we will see you again.

tHat rug does look so nice and the price is very reasonable. I have a lot of rugs in my house and this one seems like one I would like to have.
Great review, we have been looking into updating our living room rug so we will take the time to check these ones out. Really like your pictures too and your chose rug is super beautiful
Thank you!
I’m considering a Ruggable rug. After reading your review, I’m wondering how the trim held up. Would you still recommend it? Yours is beautiful!
Definitely has some pro and cons, the price could be a bit of a turn off for me but I have dark floors too, for now, I don’t have rugs because they are hard to clean but I love the look of them so this might be worth the splurge
These sound like they’d be a nice, cozy addition to any home. I’ve been looking for a new area rug.
This is so helpful! We have the dirtiest living room rug cause my dog is messy. I wonder how easy it is to brush dog’s hair out of the rug before putting it into my washer though.
The rug doesn’t really have fibers so the hair is going to sit on top of it. A lint roller would work to get most of it.
I was on pins and needles wondering if you were going to recommend ruggable. I’m planning decor for our new home so I’ve been eyeing them.
Oh good! I hope this helped!
Your rug is beautiful, but would you say it is more blue? Or more turquoise?
This is my first time of hearing about ruggable, I particularly like that you can actually wash them.
It’s the biggest bonus.
I TOTALLY need washable rugs! My husband and I are doing some re-arranging and we are noticing how DIRTY and DISGUSTING our rugs are!
I’d thought about purchasing a ruggable but the reviews and the price tags weren’t great. Thanks for sharing. Yours is pretty and I need one for the family room.
I love that you can wash this rug. This Is a rug that I need to get for house
I’ve been seeing ruggable everywhere lately and considered purchasing one for our home. I figured it’d be perfect for our patio, but the price is a bit much for me. We have two dogs and three kids. I’ll be washing it often
I have been looking for a living room rug and really like the colors of this one. I will have to check Ruggable out.
I hate that rugs are so expensive. I think this one is really beautiful though. I’m loving the whole design of it. I may need to get a huge rug here soon too.
This review was very helpful! I will definitely look into getting a ruggable rug!
Wow! This is a perfect rug in our living room. I will definitely have this one. Thank you for sharing.
Have you washed it yet? How did it go?
That’s what I’m wondering. I’m hearing the rugs shrink and shrink. How did yours fare?
I have washed my kitchen Ruggable’s almost every week s for over 6 months and dry them in the dryer every time. They still fit (3X5 size). Also, I heard someone mention difficulty vacuuming. You have to use the “half power” option on you vacuum. Every vacuum has one but many people don’t know about this.
Very curious about this too. This is where I’ve heard negative reviews.
We have pets and dark wood flooring. I hear you on how they show all the dirt. I haven’t thought about getting a rug because of the pets but Ruggable seems like a rug I would like. It will be interesting to see how the trim holds up.
I’ve not heard of these rugs before but they sound so practical! Do you know if they are available in the UK?
I never really heard of Ruggable before. But Ruggable Rugs sound so awesome to use in our home. I will check this out.
That is so beautiful with a reasonable price. I love it, will go and buy some of these.
That sounds really amazing! I love clean rugs all the time!
I’ve seen their ads and always wondered if they were as good as the rugs sounded. It’s good to know you were so happy with your purchase. A washable rug for certain areas of the house is amazing!
I seen a commercial for these rugs and thought the idea was genius! Glad to hear they are as good as they sounded.
I had no idea that these even existed! I also have hardwood floors and get so tired of using my dustmop. Definitely checking these out.
I have been using Ruggable for quite a few years, and they still look very decent. I have smaller rug sizes, and they were washed many times during the years of use. One of them is white, and my animals just cannot live without it. But I wash it again, and it looks like new.
Thank you! Good to know.
I made this exact purchase last year and love it so much! Our senior Siberian Husky just passed away last month. She, along with a cat, is why I was ecstatic to find a washable rug. For years I went through having rugs and throwing them out up to twice a year. Enter Ruggable, AMAZING. I’m a huge fan of these rugs and although we no longer have our dog, feel like they are a must have for any family with pets, kids or both!
I’m so sorry about your loss.
Now I absolutely LOVE the idea of a rug you can wash – that could make such a difference! I am going to have to see if they have anything that would fit in our home.
I appreciate your honest review. I’ve always thought about buying one but the expense has gotten me.
We have 9 children, and so as soon as I heard about Ruggable, I ordered one for the boy’s bedroom. It’s a Union Jack in gray tones (they are military buffs) and we absolutely love it. Washing is super easy and it still looks fantastic. You just can’t beat the appeal of a rug that can be completely cleaned, rather than just vacuumed and steamed!
Great review! At least now I know that i can consider buying this if I ever need one.
I love that you can wash this one… that makes it worth it 🙂
I have never heard of Ruggable before. This rug and your room are gorgeous. I wonder if the brand is available in Canada. I need a rug or two here. Actually I need to rip up some carpet and fix this decor here. It is dated. I will check this brand out as I really like that they are washable and lovely looking too. That is a great combo.
Your home is beautiful and the rug looks great with your decor and with your pups!
I have toyed with the idea of one of these rugs. The biggest negative I have read about these is that when you wash it, the sides flow up and are hard to keep down. Thanks for your honest review!!

Some really nice stuff on this website, I enjoy it.
Another honest review, from a different perspective … Stay away. We purchased 3 Ruggables and they ended up in the trash and as a mud rug in the garage.
Here’s why:
1. Dyson hand held vacuums will cause the rug to bunch up, creating a bit of a crease in the rug. Essentially the rug and the backing separate.
2. We have Dyson 360 Huerist robot vacuums in the house, they register as airway blocked on top of these, essentially they are so thin, the vacuum creates a suction that causes the machine to stop.
3. They look cheap. I must admit I think this is due to the style mainly. As I said we purchased three, two of which looked very cheap, one was just okay.
4. The corners are visible. Under the mat there’s corner pieces that seem to always pull up and create a visible line.
It’s a great idea, I really wish they would have worked, but I would never recommend based on our experience.
Do they need vacuuming? It seems if they can go in the washer, one could also just detach and shake them off on the porch or just throw them in the washer.
I am glad to see someone has made a comment about the underpads separating. I havent had mine that long, or washed many times, but the backing is leaving a lot of black plastic fibers on the underside of the rug every time I pull it apart to wash it. Makes a mess in both my washer and dryer, which I have to clean out after every wash so they dont get all over my clothes. I contacted them twice about this, but alas, they dont bother to respond.
Are you supposed to put them in the DRYER??? Most rugs I have had that had any kind of rubberized backing stated wash and hang/line dry them. It says on their website for chenille & outdoor low heat only. For their plush rugs it recommends hang drying them. I don’t think I would risk putting it in the dryer….
I just pulled one of my 4 Ruggables off the pad to wash – only the 2nd wash since I bought it last Fall. I too had little pieces of the under-pad in flakes stuck all over the backing of the rug cover. So many that there’s no way I’m chancing putting it in my washer. They are stuck and need to be scraped off (lint roller and packing tape isn’t strong enough). I’m going to call customer service, but your comment is the first mention of this problem I could find anywhere on the web. It didn’t do this at all the first time I pulled it off to wash, and isn’t happening on my others – maybe a manufacturing issue, or maybe they all break down in high traffic areas – this is in my entry way. Pretty bummed about this, and haven’t heard overwhelmingly great things about customer care after purchase. Hopefully it’s just a fluke that a replacement pad will solve.
A follow up – called Ruggable about the defective pad, used the ‘urgent matters’ phone number on their website and got a representative very quickly. They said the pad flaking off (thousands of little plastic flakes all over the back of the rug cover, embedded in fibers so they are really a pain to get off) is RARE, but something that has happened now and then. They verified my account and purchase, opened a ticket, had me attach a couple of photos of the problem, and I already have an order confirmation that a new pad is being sent. While it was no fun to scrape off as much of it as possible, (outside since the flakes are like having glitter all over), the customer representative was excellent and very pleasant to work with. Hopefully this is really a very rare pad manufacturing fluke because I really do like the rugs!
I have four Ruggable rugs and have only separated two from the backings to wash them and this has happened to BOTH. It’s such a mess and also not chancing putting this in the washer!
My kitchen runner is doing this too. I had black flakes everywhere. What a mess! I am going to try to contact customer service, but sounds like that’s a pain as well.
I emailed Ruggable customer service and within 24 hours (on the weekend) they responded and I am getting a replacement pad sent free. I was skeptical of the customer service with all the negative comments, but this is great customer service! I love their rugs and will be ordering more!
Mine are doing this too!! I guess it’s time to take to Twitter. I spent a *lot* of money on 3 of these rugs only for them to be crumbling everywhere one single year later? Completely unacceptable.
The same thing is happening to my two rugs. I’m so disappointed! I contacted customer service and they said since it was out of warranty, they can’t help me unless I can prove the rugs were defective when I received them…?! Then offered me 15% off. Kind of offended tbh
I’m in the market for a rug, and would consider a Ruggable, but I, too would like a larger (10’ x 12’) size. I would think a workable compromise would be if the larger sizes could be washed in a commercial machine at the laundromat.

Hi mates, how is the whole thing, and what you wish for to say on the topic of this article,
in my view its actually remarkable for me.
Awesome! Its really awesome piece of writing, I have got much clear
idea regarding from this post.
Did you wash it yet? I’m very curious about how it holds up after washing
FYI that fraying issue is going to happen. Mine frayed after a month. I love the color, style and concept but the rug is cheaply made and poor quality as is the pad (one of the 3 rugs I ordered had a pad about 3 inches too small.
I would love to hear an updated review. Do you still love your ruggable? Are you still confident that it was worth the price tag? Have you washed it? Did the corner fray?
Another request for a 6 month update…
Did it wear well? How easy is washing really? Would you still buy another one?
I’m thinking about getting 2 rug gables for our newly remodeled kitchen / family room: a long runner with the thicker pad for the kitchen and a larger rug for the family room area. These are the highest traffic and mess prone areas of the house and I want to know if the ruggables can stand up to frequent washing.
yes, i am curious about that too! how did it wash?
I own two Ruggables and while I love the rugs, the pads defininitely do NOT hold up. After a year and a half, the pads have essentially disintegrated, leaving tiny pieces stuck to the backs of my rugs, rendering them useless. I have followed the care instructions to the letter.
I contacted Ruggable and they offered me their standard 15% discount to order replacements which as very disappointing. As much as I love the rugs, I’ll have to search for another alternative. Replacing nearly $800.00 worth of rugs every 2 years isn’t a viable option.
Hi there! Thank you so much for this honest review. With so much fake posts on social media, I started investigating if Ruggable really delivers what it promises. Thanks again! Looking forward to your newsletters! Just prescribed 😉
I see from your blog that they are made from polyester and polyurethane, with a recycled polyester and thermoplastic rubber. Nowhere on their website do they mention this. I don’t see that as sustainable. Every time they are washed, they are sending microfibers into the water system. I don’t see why they couldn’t be made of cotton – so going to pass on these, despite the convenience. The rugs I have now are either cotton or wool. But I have to say I was looking for throw rugs for the kitchen that were non-slip. The ones I have now are polyester and I cringe inside everytime I wash them, which is often bc they are in the kitchen. Too bad though. And FYI: “These fibers contribute to ocean plastic pollution in a subtle but pervasive way: The fabrics they make — along with synthetic-natural blends — leach into the environment just by being washed. Estimates vary, but it’s possible that a single load of laundry could release hundreds of thousands of fibers from our clothes into the water supply. And these tiny fibers — less than 5 millimeters in length, with diameters measured in micrometers (one-thousandth of a millimeter) — can eventually reach the ocean. There, they’re adding to the microplastic pollution that’s accumulating in the food chain and being ingested by all sorts of marine wildlife, and even us.”
thanks for bringing this up. this is an important consideration for us as well. i thought because they would last a long time, because they are washable, that they are more sustainable. but it seems, from many of the comments, that they are not so durable and so won’t last long either…
My bedroom is long and narrow 20′ 31″ x 10′. My floor is hardwood and of course I want a large rug. Considering room size, how do I place the rug? How much goes under the bed, must it come to the edge of the dresser, night stand, chest of drawers?
Also, do I choose wall paint first, rug first, or bedspread first so colors will complement each other? I need help!
Thank you

Have you noticed after use that the plastic they put on top of the pad to act as velcro is completely falling apart and comes off? When I separate the cover from the pad, it sends what looks like a snowstorm of tiny black plastic particles everywhere! It’s a nightmare to clean up and I’ve only had my rug for just over a year and washed it a total of 3 times. I reached out to ruggable and they said there was nothing they could do since it was past the warranty period.
This happened to me too! Its been terrible trying to get all these black pieces out of my rug. I also e-mailed them with some WASHING recommendations, and all I got back was a 15% off coupon to buy another crappy rug, no thanks! I haven’t figure out how to get them all out yet, but am thinking about a spinning brush or a power washer. I’ve tried a cleaning brush, a snow scraper, and just washing it. It all helps get some off but there’s still a ton on there!
Are you able to lay a rug gable over wall to wall carpeting?
I’m also curious about this. I want to put a cute rug in our new nursery but have wall to wall carpet in there. Also wondering if we can get away with just the rug cover since it will be sitting on carpet and therefore probably won’t slip as much as on hardwood
Thanks for your review. I’ve been struggling to choose a ruggabble design, but as soon as I saw your photos I thought, “That’s the one!” I can’t find that color on their website though; do you remember what it’s called?
Yea- we purchased 2 Ruggable rugs (9X12 and 8X10), and we put the larger rug in the washing machine yesterday and laid it out in the garage to air dry. It ripped in the washing machine- first time washing it! NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL! 🙁
