These 5 easy ideas for decorating for fall will get your home fall ready quickly. They will make it feel cozy and charming for this beautiful season.

Decorating for fall is something that’s always been special to me. It’s my favorite time of year and one of those seasons where I can feel my soul stir with cool mornings and warm days. The colors on our trees are full of warmth, and it makes the farm landscape feel so quaint and charming. I always want the inside of my home to reflect the changing of the season to fall. I want to bring some of that warmth, coziness and charm to my living room – like bottling up a little of the outside magic to bring it inside too.
However, sometimes I think decorating for fall can feel overwhelming. With school starting, all the work kicking into high gear after a lazy August and projects to get done before winter sets in, I can get a little frazzled. Sometimes decorating for fall can feel like a big undertaking. But it doesn’t have to feel that way. With these 5 easy ideas for decorating for fall you can instantly add the charm and warmth to your home and capture that cozy season magic.
Ideas for Decorating for Fall No. 1 – Swap out your art
Art adds a big impact to the walls of your home. Changing it out can change the whole feel of your space. When it comes to ideas for decorating for fall, the changes don’t have to be hard. They can be quick and easy and still feel impactful.
This season I made the swap from our spring and summer art to fall prints that make the walls feel so much warmer. I realize some people have art that they never want to change, and that’s fine. But think about the paces where you have statement art. Those pieces might be easier to switch out for something with more warmth or cozy colors. You can find the photo prints I used {HERE} and an abundance of fall prints on Etsy {HERE}.
Even the family photos that could be swapped for more seasonal family photos. For instance, if you have a family photo from spring time swap it out for an old family photo that was taken in the fall instead. Or even a family photo that was take at Halloween. Sometimes even these more subtle changes can start to change the whole feeling of the room.
Ideas for Decorating for Fall No. 2 – Change your linens and textures
When I say linens and textures, I’m referring to pillows, blankets and sheets. I always start with the pillows and blankets in the family room because that’s the room that is seen the most. Blankets are the easiest swamp to make. The lighter colored summer ones go in a basket for the next year (that I promptly cover with other things) and the knitted blankets in muted, warmer tones come out.
Next I change the pillows. I’ve found that I prefer to only swap out the pillow cases. I tend to buy down pillows like these ones {HERE} or like-down pillows {HERE} and then change out the covers from season to season. In fact, I sometimes just add the new cover over the old one if the pillow is in a space that doesn’t get used much – like my living room. In rooms that are used more like the family room, I’ll remove the cover and wash it. Then add it to another basket or cabinet until the next season.
You can find my orange pillow cover that I truly love {HERE}. The textured white one on the chair that I leave up all year {HERE}. And a similar stripped one {HERE}.
The absolutely last thing I change seasonally is the sheets and that’s mainly because no one really sees our bedding. But, I do have sheet sets and duvet covers that reflect warmer tons for the change in season. Like the pillows, I recommend using duvets on the beds. This way you aren’t storing a bunch of bulky blankets or comforters. They’re easier to swap if you feel like you want to change your bedroom decor from season to season.
Ideas for Decorating for Fall No. 3 – Add in a few pumpkins
Do pumpkins make other people happy in the same way they make me happy? I truly love them. I grow them and they make me happy. Using them as decor makes extends that happiness to the inside of my home.
During this early part of the season, my pumpkins on the vine aren’t ready to be taken yet. So I will use faux pumpkins or even DIY pumpkins to get the same feeling. But when it comes to ideas for decorating for fall, there’s nothing easier to do than to add a pumpkin to the coffee table, fireplace mantle or even the kitchen table or counter. If you add in multiple pumpkins like I tend to do, then you’re certainly signaling the season with your decor. You can find some of my favorites {HERE}. You can also see my DIY terracotta pumpkins {HERE}.
Ideas for Decorating for Fall No. 4 – Change out the florals
Fall florals are another idea of decorating for fall that can really impact the overall look of a space. In the past I’ve tried to use only real florals and foliage in my space. Admittedly that gets difficult and costly. This year I’ve really embraced using faux or dried florals. Then I can save them year after year and use them again and again.
I have a few favorite places to buy fall florals that I’ve shared in a post {HERE}. However, you can really buy anything you feel drawn to. I like to stick with burgundy colors, golden yellows, rust oranges and creams. These colors feel the most natural to me and that’s truly what I’m going for in my fall decor. So if you have a vase or two sitting around that’s filled with with real flowers or maybe some leftover summer faux flowers make this easy swap. You will instantly get that charming fall warmth.
Oh and don’t forget to swap the wreaths too. I love a beautiful dried wreath, but faux wreaths work just as well. This year I’m going to try and make a few for the front door with an abundance of sage leaves and some corn stalks.
Ideas for Decorating for Fall No. 5 – Scents are important when decorating
When relators sell a home, they try to make it smell like fresh baked cookies. Why? Because scents are so important when it comes to the feeling a home gives you. This is no different when it comes to decorating for the season. So while you might not feel like a scent is “decorating” I truly believe it is, especially when it comes in the form of scented pinecones, cinnamon brooms or a good fall candle. Adding in visually scented items can really put the finishing touches on your fall decor.
I have a basket of cinnamon scented pinecones sitting on the coffee table along with a fall scented candle that’s in a bronze container. Both of these items bring scents into the room. However, visually they also lend themselves to the ideas for decorating for fall with the textures and warm-colored canister. Even if you just want to use essential oils in a diffuser, there can be some really beautiful diffusers that can convey the scent and the look of the season.
